UVA vs UR?

I've read many comparisons of UVA to W&M and W&M to UR but none of UVA to UR. Anyone want to comment? I hear that people in VA think of UVA as the rich kids school but that seems to make little sense with the cost of attendance of each. How do they compare academically and socially?

Appleas and Oranges...UVA and UR are in two different categories as far as national rankings...UR only offers degrees up towards Master's, so they are ranked in the Southern Master's Universities by US News and World Report...they have much more of a liberal arts feel and the campus is gorgeous...they are #1 in the South Region (US News does not rank Master's Universities nationally) and have been for 11 straight years...UVA on the other hand is considered more of a research institution with many more students and offers degrees up towards PHD's and other professional degrees, so US News ranks them with the Harvards and other larger schools in the US...they are ~#20 in the nation overall...At the end of the day, it depends on the major/program to determine which is better academically...plus, it depends upon what you are personally looking for...a large school with tons of potential opportunities(UVA) or a liberal arts feel with a personal touch (UR)...both schools are very, very good and well-respected...UR is in the process of trying to take the next step up to a nationally recognized/well-respected reputation....people that go to UR know they are already there, just need label changed...consider both, but since both are well-respected, try to decide what your personal preference is in future academic experiences will be...good luck!

Oh, I forgot to comment on the social life...the stereotype at both schools is of rich, mean kids that wear Ralph Lauren...But I can assure you that at both, you will find plenty of people not like this...However, if you are looking for diversity a little more, UVA would be better....UR is known for lacking diversity (even the Univ. President acknowledges this in his letter for the school's strategic plan)...both schools have prominent frat scenes...

Thanks for the input!

I just want to add something regard UR:

I always heard people in Virginia (or sometimes even outside) talk about UR as "almost Ivy League." It's a great school for those who like personal attention - and for those going into graduate programs in law or business. U.S. News has agreed to change UR's status to "liberal arts college" for their next rankings.

Anyway, UVA is equally amazing and enjoys outstanding national recognition.
