hi I got into both and am debating which to go to
I know UVa is better accademically, and ranks higher too, and what I'm worried abt is that UVa may tend to be too elitist...coz to be honest, I was reli shocked when UVa accepted me, as I'm below average in terms of SAT, school results, class ranks etc. and I dont have any hooks unless you count being an international as one (I'm from Hong Kong), though I still see many internationls who got accepted with much better grades than me.
so wt im worried is, when quite a number of ppl turned down ivies for UVa, will it be v. hard to get good grades when all of those surrounding me are all extremely smart ppl?
and in terms of social life, is it hard to merge in with the students in UVa coz most of them come from the same high school? and there isnt much diversity in UVa so will I be easily accepted among my peers?

If you want to study science or engineering UW is better. For liberal arts undergrad and business UVa is better. UW has a larger international student community and the city is larger and has more to do.

I agree with barrons. However, I wouldn't say UVA is in a bad location either.

I did not mean to imply UVa was an undesirable location. The weather is better and the town has its charms. I spend considerable time there when I'm back in Lynchburg.

13 kids from my high school came here, i saw each of them no more than 3 times last semester. seriously, most kids at UVa don't hang around with their high school classmates (with the exception of people from TJ). People here are extremely social and desire to meet new people. Don't worry about social life.

What do you want to study? coz that's very important. Also, it depends on where you want to work for in the future. large research state schools such as UW, UIUC are more international recognized than more undergrad-focus schools such as UVA.

I'd like to major in business.
indeed, I'm really concerned about the reputation issue, coz I'll probably come back to HK to work after I graduate, and not many ppl in HK have heard of UVa, but more of wisconsin...

i'm sure recruiters for HSBC recognize UVa's business program.

UW-Madison...more liberal and less uptight.

Just my opinion.

the University of Wisconsin-Madison business school is ranked as the 11th best undergraduate (maybe 12th) in the country.

A great piece with some links: http://www.bus.wisc.edu/news/0145.asp

Wisconsin is a bit different from UVA on location and student body types. I guess I'd go where you feel most welcomed. However, if you do pick UW, don't feel like you're going to have some type of cake walk as opposed to UVA.

thanks for all ur advice, but I've finally decided to go to UVa, hope I wont regret!

There were a couple Wisconsin students working as summer interns at HSBC and Citibank last year. Not sure about UVa as I wasn't keeping track.

People in banking and finance here are quite familar with both schools. You can't go wrong with either choice. Good luck.

for ibanking, UVa>Madison

And the Cavaliers rule.....

Thought I'd encouraged her to go to UW-Mad. Oh well.

People don't like to admit it but most of the time prestige and rank > any information people give. I've encountered this issue a lot even when giving irrefutable stats and facts. It explains why some kids majoring in polisci or IR will take Cornell/Brown (Ivy) over Georgetown (#25 overall).

In this case I think she did well by choosing UVA but my main point is that don't think even the best advice on CC can overcome Usnews rankings or personal prestige evaluations :)

hotingzilla, sorry u're too late! :P my heart is now set on UVa!

Uva>>>>>>UW

UW had 3 members elected to the NAS and 5 to the AAS while UVa had one to the AAS in the most recent year just released. UW has about 4 times the NAS members as UVa.

Omg Ur Rite, We Should Rank Colleges Based On Nas And Aas Members!!!!

I would go to UVA.
