UVA vs. Vandy vs. Georgetown

So I'm a guy from Jersey who's gotten into these three schools. I'm interested in majoring in politics or business at UVA, political science at Vandy, and government at Gtown. I like to party, like to have fun. These are my top three choices.

If people could compare the schools, describe differences between them, that would be much appreciated.

I know UVA and Georgetown. Scholl's are VERY even on quality. It's a tough choice based on what you say. Try this. Do you see yourself in a lovely small town with big time college sports* OR wanting to be in monied neighborhood of a large city with all that implies. You like to party - but do you see yourself at a fraternity party weekend, living it up at a football tailgate OR hanging in Georgetwon (neighborhood) bars and crowded townhouse parties? Don't know Vandy well enough to comment.
*Georgetown does have bigtime basketball but they don't play near the campus.

One thing to consider, at UVA you need to apply to get into their business school after you've begun college. Their classes are graded on a bell-curve freshman year, from what I've heard. Granted that McIntire is an extremely solid business program (#2 in the nation), it may be very competitive to get in (I don't have personal experience with this, but this is what I've heard - call them to confirm and see how many are accepted into undergrad B-School.

Georgetown is obviously very solid for government because of its presitge and location.

Vanderbilt has a very solid name as well and I'm sure their poli-sci program will open up doors. Another bonus since you're a guy is that Vanderbilt has one of the hottest student body's in the nation.

I would call up each school and get more info on their programs, how well they place into internships/careers, the classes sizes in the majors, etc.

Good luck and congrats on getting into these three very good schools.

My final choice was between Vanderbilt and Georgetown (for the same majors as you would be studying). I'd been set on going to Georgetown since December of my senior year. I visited for a second time during an accepted students' weekend, didn't feel like it "fit" me, and made a last minute decision to come to Vanderbilt in April.

I chose Vanderbilt because I felt at home here. In retrospect, Georgetown may have been a better fit in terms of interning throughout college and working into a job in DC. However, you can always find internships here in Nashville (e.g. Senators Alexander and Corker have offices within 5 minutes of campus) or during the summer. (I had two internships in Nashville, one in my hometown, and one in Washington.) I wouldn't trade the experience I have had here for anything.

Have you visited these schools? If you haven't and can, definitely visit this month. My best advice is to go to the school that "fits."

Your choice should definitely be Georgetown! Georgetown has it all: beyond mere name recognition, Georgetown has the academic weight to back it up. Courses and course load are demanding, but you've shown by being accepted that you have what it takes. In addition, all that DC has to offer is at your doorstep, and that's alot! Whether your interests are politics, culture, the arts or business, opportunities abound to enrich your understanding and develop credentials that will make you stand out when you are looking for a job or applying to law or grad school. At the same time, Georgetown has a great campus that fosters a cohesive, vibrant student community. This is where alot of your education actually occurs, sharing perspectives with students from diverse cultures and backgrounds. And fun! There's plenty of that to be had after you've aced your midterms or finals! Wisconsin & M Streets are just a few blocks away. Good luck in your decision...but choose Georgetown! You'll be glad you did!

Mr. Yankee,
Wow! You've been admitted to three of the very best colleges in America when measured for their ability to deliver a great experience in the classroom, in your social life and in the athletic life and scene that they provide.

The one prediction that I can make with 98% certainty is that, six months from now, you'll be convinced that you made the right choice and you'll be telling your family and your friends that "_____ is the greatest college in the country."

Now you've got to fill in the blank. Good luck and have a great time.

You're way past this stage, but perhaps others are looking at this thread and comparing these colleges, so here are some of the common data comparisons.

Gtown, duh! :P

gtowns endowment is alot lower than i thought it would be

Looks like I'm headed to Charlottesville!

hey guys...im sorry to revive this thread again. but i was kinda curious.
why is Georgetown's endowment so low?
i really like Georgetown and Vanderbilt. Im torn on which i want to apply early to.
Does anyone have any other thoughts about the differences between the schools that would steer someone one way or the other?

Hi, zfox001. I am a GU Law graduate, and I can tell you it is a fantastic school, and you should not worry about the endowment. If you are accepted to GU and attend, you will become another successful Hoya that can help beef up the endowment. Good luck!

It's irrelevant how high a school's endowment is.
Absolutely positively irrelevant.

Schools with endowments of 250 million, 500 million, 1 billion, 1.5 billion all gave me approximately the same financial aid award.

Georgetown guarantees to meet 100 percent demonstrated need. That should suffice.

Hopefully you visited both. If so, which one did you feel more comfortable at? You will get a fine education at either.

I have visited Georgetown and liked it a lot. I will be visiting Vanderbilt in August.
I family around the DC area so that is kinda comforting. I have spent many many summers in Maryland, Delaware, DC area
On the other hand I have never spent any time in the south. so it will be an interesting trip.

Please report back what you think of Vandy. My D is a rising junior. If you want any opinions feel free to pm me.

Most statistics that I've seen reveal that Georgetown is not as great with financial aid as UVa or Vandy. Keep in mind you might've just gotten lucky.

Anyway, the endowment per student is what really matters. Two schools with a $5 billion endowment will be in much different situations if one has 50,000 students and the other has 5,000 students.

Maybe, but I was referring to two national universities and LACs that had offered me admission.

UVA, Vandy, and Georgetown all have so-so financial aid, I'd say.

By the way, the SAT numbers for UVA are wrong, its 1280-1490 last time I checked.
