UVA vs. W&M

How comparable are admissions between UVA and W&M, especially for an in-state applicant?

W&M is harder to get into b/c they take less students then UVA

Really? I recently got into W&M, but I didn't get a likely letter from UVA.

"I recently got into W&M, but I didn't get a likely letter from UVA."

And? W&M is very comparable to UVA in terms of difficulty of admission.

I feel uncertain about getting into UVA. It's one of my first-choice schools.

So, I'm just wondering if an acceptance into W&W would predict another into UVA. I know it's not a 100% guarantee that I would get into UVA. I just need to prepare for the decision on April 1st. Gasp In 2 weeks!

Obviously, you are a qualified applicant for UVA. You don't need a likely letter from UVA to tell you that. By the way, not getting one doesn't mean not getting in. Congrats on getting in W&M!

I think UVA takes 37% of their apps and W & M takes 31%, so by looking soley at the numbers, W & M would be harder to get into.

However, I think it is more common for people to be rejected by UVA and admitted to W & M, than the other way around. If so, I'm in trouble because I just got waitlisted at W & M and also applied to UVA.

UVA is a better school in most aspects.

I just got into William and Mary after being deferred early from UVA...

ive heard w&m is more focused on grades/scores than other aspects whereas uva is all about the total package. not to say w&m doesnt look at ec's but i think uva takes them into more consideration.

vinyard06, I think I have to disagree with you. I feel that W&M looks more past an applicant's numbers than UVA. I mean, obviously, the two schools are both going to look at an applicant's GPA, SATs, etc. but when it comes down to it, I think W&M looks at EC's more.

^^ If so, I am definitely not getting into UVA since I just got waitlisted at W & M!

i was waitlisted at uva but i did not get into w&m. my ec's were def one of the strongest points of my app.

so who knows. its all very subjective

I would think that W&M, as a liberal arts school, looks much more into your essays and extra curriculars, etc than a state school would.. that being said UVA is very different from most state schools in that they try their best to take a holistic approach to an application despite the large number of applicants. So who knows. Personally I think UVA has more predictable admissions than W&M, but that really doesn't comment on difficulty of either

I would agree that UVA admissions are more predictable...

(W&M is a state school though)

there are people who get into both, people who don't get into both, people who get into one and not the other, and people who get waitlisted at both.

both of them r super-predictable at least for in-state. Really for in-state u just get the right stats and ur almost in. It's true and i really hate that and people seem to think getting in UVA or W&M is a big deal when ur in-state.

Only the top 5% of the kids in our school (GPA-wise) can predictably get into either UVA or W&M, with a smattering in the next 5%. In each of the past two years, the acceptance rate for our school to UVA was 40% of applications; virtually no one not in the top 10% of the class applied. So, for 95% of the kids it is a big deal, even for in-state.

^^ I would agree with that, expect for was has just happened with W & M admissions at my school. I am in top 5% and did not get in to W & M -- more kids got accepted who were NOT in top 5% this round.

I don't think admissions to W & M and UVA are that predictable anymore.

imiracle - are you kidding? Getting into either school is a big deal for anybody.. in-state status only helps so much. You still have to be an excellent candidate to get into UVA.. as I recall most of hte students from my particular high school who applied htere got deferred early decision instate (all top notch candidates), while three received admission, and only three students from my school received likely letters.. you'd be surprised. Look at the thread titled "If you're instate you have it made" (I think that's the title) for more insight.

W&M decisions just came out, and from what I see a lot of people who got into W&M at my school were the ones who got deferred ED at UVA... that being said, I am sure there are many students who got accepted to UVA who were rejected to W&M, but I don't know of that many students who got rejected from W&M (yet)
