UVA vs. W&M

roxor: Congrats on your acceptance to W & M. If you don't mind me asking, what were your STATS?

SAT: 630M, 620V, 600W
SATII: 570MII, 650 lit, 650 ushistory
GPA: 4.56
Rank: 25/310

essays : pretty good and humorous
ECs: captain field hockey, captain debate, part amnesty international hs and college recuitments, softball varsity all 4 years, part of a superintendant of schools advisory board, lots of other activites

my twin sister got in early decision and im instate

Was there more than one essay required for W & M?

yeah there were like 3 essays that I had to write.
Two were from questions they asked, and the third was an optional essay that you could write about anything. I wrote about a time when I was being towed by my friends jeep on rollerblades and I crashed into my car and dented the door.

Roxor: I'm kind of confused here. I thought the common app only had one essay. I did know about the optional essay for W & M though. I chose not to do it, but instead sent in a collage that I had made.

Are you a legacy or a minority? Not to be too personal, but all these things help with the kids applying next year.

Btw: you had a really high gpa an good ECs -- you deserved to get in!

To what other schools did you apply?

Common app has the long and short essay (150 words about extracurriculars)

I would bet the economic breakdown of UVA and W&M are roughly the same. I agree that UVA has more of a party feel, and that W&M kids are "more down to earth."

my mom went to brown, dad went to cornell
i'm not a minority.

and I didn't use the common app, william and mary also has it's own app if you dont want to use common app, so I did that one.

roxor: Did you not want to apply to Cornell or Brown?

my mom went to brown, dad went to cornell
i'm not a minority.

and I didn't use the common app, william and mary also has it's own app if you dont want to use common app, so I did that one.

^person above is right, they were on activities and such, so they were short

I applied to brown RD. waiting to hear back, I dont expect to get in, I just applied because it would be wonderful to go there on the off chance or on a clerical error lol. I went to there summer program for prelaw

^^ Well, you still have a great school to attend, regardless of the outcome at Brown.

thanks pal. Where are you looking to go? I am still trying to figure out if I would rather go to UVA or William and Mary

^^ I'm looking for a clerical error to happen at Princeton, myself!

roxor: So, you only applied to Brown, UVA and W&M -- that's all?

i applied and have already gotten into jmu, cnu, and mary washington's honors program, but those were all safety. so thats all for me. how about you?

^^Very good! I applied (and in order of my preference) to:

Princeton (deferred Early Decision)
Cornell
William & Mary (waitlisted)
UVA
University of Richmond (accepted)

So far I've gotten accepted at my 5th choice school! Still a good school, it just happend to be at the bottom of my list.

And that's all !

awesome, those are great schools. any idea of a major?

^^ Great schools for a "not so great" student! Princeton was a super reach and Cornell was a reach. UVA is a match but so was W&M and I got waitlisted there! LOL

My intended major is Spanish with a concentration in Latin American Studies. I do have demonstrated interest in L.A. Studies and I am hoping the schools pick up on that (most notably Princeton & Cornell). I applied to Princeton and Cornell because they were "fit" schools for me -- not necessarily based on my STATS, but other "fit factors" such as my intended area of study of course, ECs, personal experiences and all that other stuff.

I feel that most people can get a quality education almost anywhere so it boils down to fit. Even if I was qualified to apply to Harvard or MIT, I would not have because I don't see those schools as "a fit". Same goes for JMU, Va. Tech, Mary Wash, CNU and countless others I don't see myself as a fit.
