Personally, I do not believe any weapons should be allowed on campus at all.

Okay, but if the school doesn't prohibit it, then he shouldn't be punished for it.

This incident (edited to add: if it happened as reported) is ridiculous and I am amazed to see so many people defending it. School shootings, like certain other catastrophic incidents I can think of, are horrible and tragic, but I'm sick of them being invoked to justify this climate of paranoia and overreaction.

^^ Well, I know what you mean, and I'm torn about that too. But I don't see this as a freedom of speech case. I'm assuming--perhaps incorrectly--that the investigation of this guy turned up some stuff that is not being released due to confidentiality requirements, and that having guns on campus is against the rules. Certainly, if neither of those things is the case, the expulsion should not stand.

There's got to be more to the story. We've only been given one side.

If the story as presented is all there is, then the University will face a very expensive civil rights case.

I checked the UVA Wise student handbook, available online. Weapons must be checked in to campus police upon arrival on campus. There is ongoing debate in Virginia as to whether or not those who hold concealed weapons permits should have to abide by the rules of state universities that request weapons be stored or altogether prohibit them. I do not think it unreasonable that students be required to check weapons with the campus police where they may be signed out during specific time periods- hunting season, perhaps. Based on the facts as we know them, it does appear that he broke the rules by improper weapons storage.

Why would you need a handgun at school anyway?
