<p>One of my friends told me what they're doing for college.</p>
<p>They want to go to UVA...but we live in Texas.</p>
<p>She is going to move to VA for 4-6 months (to get in-state prices), and going to begin to attend UVA in the spring semester.</p>

<p>Is she going to declare independence from her parents?
Is she going to file taxes?
Is it ok with her parents if they no longer claim her as a dependent? The financial situation for the family is probably better with the daughter as a dependent.</p>
<p>I don't know about Va. but in NY one full year of residency is required for in-state tuition.</p>
