UVM EA Class of 2023

i had all the right stats some even above their requirements and still got deferred… i don’t understand how I’m supposed to get into schools if being above their requirements will push them to defer me & being below their requirements will also get me deferred

@jbseattle Oy!

@ilovebillyjoel
My wife is all pissed and blaming me for not forcing my D to not apply to more affordable schools. Not sure how I could have precisely predicted aid. Plus she is in at Western Washington which is only about $23k per year all in. Hard to beat that.

thanks for making us deferred ppl feel better lol i just think that its kind of unfair

Daughters boyfriend: Accepted, Presidential Scholarship 20,000 year. First Choice. ACT:33, GPA: 4.0, excellent writer, leadership in a few clubs, works, out of state,

DD accepted with $20,000/year Presidential Scholarship. 1540 SAT, 4.3 GPA. Very excited. Any idea when Honors College invitations are expected?

Accepted to nursing program with presidential scholarship. Strong academics, string essay and tons of social activism and community initiatives.

Congrats RMA 123, My D was also accepted to the nursing program with presidential scholarship. Solid academics and ECs. I hear that UVM only accepts 10% of applicants to its nursing program.

@CGHman Congrats to your D. One of my top choices and I’m so excited.

@Penned23… Honors College invites come out in January. Congrats to your D!

In with strong GPA, AP and honors classes, tons of leadership roles, all-around athlete and kick-ass blues musician. Mid-range test scores. Trustee scholarship too, which needless to say makes it very appealing! Deferred from ED U Richmond the day before, so this was great news. Awaiting other EA decisions (Elon, Colorado College, Tulane) and will go from there.

Was I supposed to add stats? 1500 sat, 3.8 gpa, few EC, job after school, All honors and AP classes. Very heavy science load this year, international community service, stellar essay and optional essay, alum recommendation. presidential scholar into Rubinstein School.

For those of us who were deferred, the system says we “could” send more information (test scores, transcripts). DD is done with testing, so nothing there. Curious of your thoughts on transcripts. DD weighted GPA was 3.55, and her first quarter grades were around the same (Bs and As in honors and AP courses). Does it make sense to send another transcript now that Q1 has closed? I ask because although the GPA is not changing much, the courses are AP Psych, Honors ECE UCONN Plant Science, honors economics. In Creative Writing (non honors) an A. Also, second half classes include H Mythology and H PoliSci. They don’t start however until next year for Q3. I’m not sure if sending more info makes a difference, since they may already have this info. She already has letters of recommendation sent.

The other issue is that without the 10-20K scholarship(s) being mention above, I do not think we can justify the cost, but with those it would make UVM one of the top choices because of her appreciation of the school, culture and programs.

Lastly, and more of a side note, I keep seeing people speaking of “amazing/great essays”. I find that a little funny since an essay is entirely objective, and so I am not sure how someone can be sure their essays will hit the reader as “amazing”. If that is the case, and there is some magic formula these days, then it means the essay have lost some of their actual value if it’s now formulaic? For example, DD felt her essay was amazing as well, and told a great story, but can’t be sure the reader will feel the same.

I heard Vermont still could offer aid for those who were deferred. You should not pull the application @HankCT. We would need more like $20k for it to make sense. Might leave the app albeit $20k merit after being deferred seems unlikely.

The net price calculator says she would qualify for 15k trustee … which I think we could make work.

D accepted and awarded Trustees Scholarship :slight_smile:

Congratulations to everyone! I was accepted into a biology major in the College of Arts and Sciences with a 3.85 W GPA and a 30 ACT. I don’t think my essays we’re great but my common app essay was pretty unique as I have a sort of unique hobby/passion. I do three EC’s that I’m heavily involved in and have won several awards in. I also volunteer at a science museum. Given the 15k Trustree… but the net calculator told me 18k presidential. My GPA will be improving greatly at the end of this semester is it possible to argue for more merit aid? I come from a very low income family so aid is very important to me. We also have had a huge change in income so I am going to have to talk to financial services and ask if that can be taken into consideration for need based aid.

DD accepted OOS with Presidential scholarship $18K/year. GPA: 3.46 UW SAT: 1410, lots of APs, great ECs, 2 years of JV sports, after-school job, study abroad summer.

@HankCT I am not an admission officer, but I think the biggest thing your daughter could do would be to write a letter to Admissions reaffirming her interest in the college and clearly articulating what it is about UVM that makes her want to attend the school. She should include specific information from their website and other sources showing that she took the time to learn about the school. It wouldn’t hurt to explain how her past experiences and personal qualities line up with the values of the college. I would also suggest sending in this year’s grades. Her courses show continued intellectual curiosity. Why wait for them to ask her for her grades to be reconsidered? Take that step off the table by submitting them proactively. Best of luck to your daughter!

Accepted with 3.8 GPA, 32 ACT. Presidential schlarship (9k per semester, 72k total). Solid extracurriculars.
