UVM vs. Northeastern (decision due tomorrow)

I've narrowed down my list to UVM and Northeastern and am having a very hard time deciding (I have to decide tomorrow). I like both schools a lot, and burlington and boston are both really cool towns. I do feel like i might fit in better with northeastern students. I am interested in possibly majoring in environmental science, and i know that uvm has a better program for that, but i'm not sure if that should be a deciding factor since i am not 100% sure i will do env. science. I hate the cold weather so i am somewhat worried about the long winters in vermont, but i know that it will be cold in boston as well. I know Northeastern's academics are very good and that co-op is useful but i have heard that it's difficult to transfer between majors/schools within the university. Northeastern is a lot closer than UVM (45 minutes as opposed to 3 and a half hours). I am laid-back, shy, and fairly serious about doing well in school, though i intend on being involved in extracurriculars like clubs and intramural sports, and have an active social life. It seems that Northeastern has a better academic reputation than uvm. I come from a small town so i may be overwhelmed by being in the city constantly. If you have any thoughts on either or both of the schools, it would be greatly appreciated. thank you

Accoustic,

I’m a Northeastern alum and I’m biased NU as well as biased Boston. The best college town period. That said I would not downplay UVM academically. A lot of strong students go there.

Whether you would enjoy and thrive in the city as opposed to a smaller town is something you might want to bounce off of people that know you.

In the end it comes down to fit assuming the money side is a non-issue here. Trust your own instincts and best of luck.

thank you for your answer. is northeastern seen as generally better than uvm academically, or about the same? does it depend a lot on major? since i’m not 100% sure what i want to major in, which school would be better? i’ve heard it’s harder to change your major at northeastern, but then again, co-op could help me decide if my major is right for me. Also, does anyone know anything about northeastern’s dual-major program?

also, what programs is each school known for? thanks

go to Northeastern because of the co-op program, both schools are basically the same academically (outside of co-op) and reputation wise

Strong Programs:

Northeastern: Business, Journalism, Communications, Engineering, Sciences, Architecture, Health Services, Computer/Information Sciences

UVM: Business, Education, Psychology, Pre-med, Animal Science, Rubenstein School Of Natural Resources (Environmental Science)

What decision did you make?

I can’t speak to the strength of UVM’s programs.

For anybody surfing in, Northeastern’s strengths lie in Engineering, Business, Nursing, Pharmacy, Criminal Justice and Computer Science. Dual majors are pretty common such as Electrical Engineering and Physics. You can also design your own dual major: International Business and Economics (for example).

It’s not hard at all to change or add majors (or minors). However, it may come at the cost of some free electives. You can’t switch from say Electrical Engineering to Finance without doing the prerequisites.

Northeastern is not for everyone. If you don’t have much of a clue that one of the colleges has something you will really like you are better off going to a school that has broader (but not better) opportunities (like BU).

I decided on UVM because of the env. program. I was just wondering which programs were stronger at each school in case i decide to switch majors. If i decided i wanted to do engineering or business or something, i might try to transfer to nu. But yeah thanks for the information.

UVM is a fine school. Best of luck there!

UVM?

Apologies.

UVM is an excellent choice especially if you are studying environmental science, congrats on making a good decision!
