UVM vs. UMass Amherst (honors for both)

Both are similar financially (UVM is actually cheaper despite me being an MA resident) and I like both schools. However, does one have a better reputation than the other?

Most places I look, UMass Amherst seems to be better known and even more reputable in some cases. I am interested in a business major with potentially a premed track, or a health science double major. UMass’s business school is definitely ranked higher (have not really heard of UVM’s) and both universities’ health sciences seem competitive.

In your opinion, which school will be more recognizable? Is one considered more “prestigious” than the other? Is there really any difference and should I pay attention to ranking, or is the difference to small to make it a major factor? I am definitely considering other factors but just want to see people’s thoughts on this particular component.

Thanks!

p.s., if anyone’s feeling extra helpful:

I also got into Brandeis and Northeastern (i.n.) but the financial packages are slightly tricky. But, say that finances are not an issue (we’ve filed a special circumstances form for both)… Any opinions on which school is best out of all of these?

I think UVM and UMass Amherst are in the same tier, though UMass Amherst will be better for certain subjects (example, CS). Neither will carry more prestige than the other - focus on the best mix of affordability / fit.

I think if you can get good aid packages from both, Brandies and Northeastern would both be a slightly higher tier. Both offer pro’s and cons again though that even out. Focus on fit/finances again. Brandies and Northeastern are VERY different schools, sharing few things besides proximity and overall tier.

None of the four are going to carry any big prestige or name bonuses.
