UVM vs. UMASS Amherst

I got into UVM and UMASS Amherst. I live in Massachusetts, so tuition would be 12K in MA. However, I got the Honors College at UVM and I got an 11K per year scholarship at UVM, bu t it is still super expensive out of state. No merit money at UMASS, and I don't qualify for fin aid.
I want to major in math and get certified to teach math 7-12, and I think both schools have good ed programs. Advice?

Since umass is so inexpensive you should definitely consider it. But I’d suggest visiting them both and seeing where you fit in. Both schools have a different feel to them. Many benefits being at a big school like umass because you can meet people from all the colleges around the area, your closer to home,-and can even take classes at Hampshire college or Amherst college! Also, uvm is absolutely beautiful, has an amazing down town with a large lake down the street, and has great academics as well.

The feedback I have had from students who attend UMass which kind of turned us off is that is is very overcrowded. This trickles down to class registration and many students have to extend their graduation dates and take courses in the summer because they simply cannot get into classes that they need to graduate. I would recommend really looking into this.
The financial situation of your family is also a very important consideration as is the rating of the schools, job placement rates and feel of the school.

LOLOLOLOL came across this thread by chance and I’m pretty sure OP is my mentoring buddy… nice username.

Although yeah, *** UMass? Is UVM that much worse? I don’t see why we’d get a ton there and nothing at UMass.

UVM is likely trying to attract him more because they want the diversity of non-Vermont or something else about his application. UMass knows that they will get lots of kids from Mass that apply, so they are going to try too hard to get him to come since there are 100 others waiting in line.

HAHAHA HI
Yeah, I agree that UMASS would try to attract out of staters, but it just bugs me because UMASS was sort of a safety for me, so it’s like why did I try so hard in high school when I could have gotten in with with lower stats and still no merit or honors. (other than learning for the sake of learning of course)
I really have no issues with going to a state school over private…I think it would make more sense for my family because they are also supporting my sisters med school education, but I wish they gave me something.

I would highly suggest choosing UVM over UMASS Amherst. Especially with the merit money, UVM is a better school and although UMASS is a good choice, it does not compare to UVM. I’m assuming UMASS was a safety, and they probably did not give you much money because you are in state and they majority of their students are in state

What makes UVM better than UMASS?

Ranking, reputation, Burlington, job placement

So would you guys say that UVM plus honors is worth 8K more than UMASS? (32K total for 4 years)
My parents would be able to afford it, but I don’t want to completely throw money away.

UVM is MUCH more difficult to get into, therefore it will look better for you. UMASS is in the middle of no where and it is much more of a safety to those who choose to apply to UVM. feel free to message me on here. I am going to be a UVM freshman

chish34h, I don’t know what criteria you’re using to say UVM is much more difficult to get into. For example, Princeton Review’s Best 373 Colleges (2011) assigns UMass an Admissions Selectivity Rating of 86 and UVM 83, & UVM had higher acceptance rate (71% vs 67%) for the year compared, presumably 2009.

I am the parent of a newly accepted UVM student (class of 2016!) but I went to UMass when I was a student. I know, that was a long time ago. Those who say UMass is in the middle of nowhere may want to reconsider that thought. It is in the beautiful pioneer valley along the Connecticut River and with 5 colleges in the area, there is plenty of culture and outdoor activities. With that said, Burlington offers all that and more. And to me, the deciding factor would be size… UMass is way over twice the size of UVM which translates to more huge classes, less connection with professors, and as someone mentioned, tough scheduling. UVM isn’t small, but overall is much more accessible. For the relatively small price increase, I would go for UVM.

As an education major, you are not likely going to make a ton of money, so you should consider for yourself if that 8K/year (32K/4 years) is worth it. UVM honors is hard to get into and you will get special treatment, which may motivate you more. If you plan to go to grad school, you also have to consider your bachelor+masters total expenses. If the 8K difference fits into your budget, or you won’t go into debt (and your parents won’t) I would choose UVM honors.

Uvm is known for competitive admission atracting students with higher grades. But umass is also a great school but i and most people would suggest going to uvm

I’m not worried about the loans-my parents will pay for college and grad school. so it really doesn’t have much to do with my future salary.
I just don’t want to waste my parent’s money, but they can afford it.
And I got an 11K per yr scholarship so that would be 21K for tuition while UMASS would be 12K per year.
thanks guys…and if anyone goes to UVM, what are the pros and cons?

yeah i think UVM would be your best bet especially when it comes to applying for jobs. im also the same major as you and recieved merit aid as well!

^how much merit aid if you don’t mind

I got ten thousand a year for 4 years if i keep a 3.0… Do you think that will hard

wow…that is some nice merit. I see in another post you have 1700 SATs, what scholarship did you get?. UVM website shows 1800 SATs needed for the Presidential(up to $11k) and the Trustee $2k-7K with SATs of 1650. Maybe they upped the merit aid this year?
