I have received acceptances for both but I am having a difficulty deciding which one I like more. What are the disadvantages and advantages for going to each school? Financial aid is not an issue. I am planning on majoring in communication sciences and disorders/ speech pathology if that helps.

Thank you for your time!

Hi!
Are you out of state for both?
I live in the Burlington area and was also accepted to UVM! Well location-wise UVM is right in Burlington, which is really the only city in VT with interesting things happen. It’s a fun city, and there’s a lot to do as a college student, despite it’s smaller size. With that being said, umass is significantly closer to Boston, so you can easily spend the day in Boston if you want. UVM is 2ish hours away from Montreal, and then other than that, it is at least a four hour drive to other major cities. I’m not familiar with Amherst, but I do know someone who goes to Amherst College and loves it.

Do you ski or hike or want to start doing either of these?? If you’re a big skier, go to UVM, you won’t find a better school near skiing in the east… Or at least that’s what all the skiers I know tell me. Other than skiing there’s tons of outdoor activities that you can do in Vermont.

I don’t think that one has an overall better reputation than the other. But if you really want to live in Boston or Massachusetts, UMass will obviously be well known there. I don’t know anything specific about the major you want to pursue, so I can’t really speak to that.

But, let me know if you have a specific UVM question!

^I disagree that UVM and UMass have an ‘equal’ reputation. I’m from NJ, and UMass is seen as a better school.

I know a nice advantage to UVM is that it’s part of the five college consortium, which allows you to take classes at Mount Holyoke, Smith, Hampshire and Amherst College (!).

Well admissions-wise UMass is more selective, accepting 63% of applicants, but the middle 50% of ACT scores is 24-28 whereas UVM is 24-29 and accepts 77% of applicants.
^ that info is taken from college board

It’s actually UMass Amherst that is part of the consortium , not UVM.

These are pretty similar academically. Neither is a very good school academically, but they are reasonably priced if you can’t afford a better school in the northeast.

I would visit each and see which you where you would rather live for four years. UVM has the nicer campus and has a very out-doors environment. People enjoy skiing and hiking and camping, etc. UMass is a more suburban experience with a lot of locals (almost all) from Massachusetts.
