I really love burlington, and was thinking about transferring to UVM. But I've recently heard the school is going downhill in quality. Is this true? I know their US news ranking went down, but I don't know how much that means.

Yeah, I remember someone telling me that it used to be incredibly selective, but it's definately not now. Not sure if it's gone down hill academically or not though.

We live near Burlington and I know several students at UVM. They just opened a wonderful new student center. It's getting much harder for VT students to get in because of increases in OOS apps. I have heard nothing about quality declining. I think the current president is very effective. And Burlington is a wonderful college town.

jna9788 - I graduated from UVM a few years ago and I would strongly disagree with your assumption that uvm is going downhill. In fact, just the opposite is true. The number of applications to the school have increased dramatically over the past 5-7 years. As bethievt noted, they just opened a wonderful new student center that cost around 60 million dollars to build. While I was a student their, they added an honors college and built new leed certified residence halls while renovating many of the older residence halls.

Obv, being a flagship state university they offer many different majors...so, what were you thinking about majoring in? And what school are you thinking of leaving?

I found that most of my classes were small and were all taught by professors who seemed to really care about teaching (not just doing their own research.) Most of my buddy's had similar positive experiences.

And lastly - Burlington really is one of the best college towns! You should come visit if you have never been.

Hope this helps!

Also, St. Michael's College, a top Catholic, residential, LAC located on a beautiful 400 acre campus in the Burlington area of Colchester, Vermont deserves mention. It is one of only four Catholic colleges in New England (including B.C., Fairfield & Holy Cross) and one of only twenty Catholic colleges nationwide with a Phi Beta Kappa chapter.

My nephew went to St Michael's, graduating within the past five years, and really loved it. He thought the academics were great and that the campus atmosphere and school spirit were outstanding.
