UW CS Appeal Chances?

I applied and got accepted to UW but denied for direct admission to their CS program. I’m planning on appealing with the following stats:

In-state applicant in Running Start
HS GPA: 3.88 UW
Running Start GPA: 3.87
Only one AP but on track to graduate with AA degree
No standardized tests due to COVID
Letter of Recommendation from Community College CS Professor (fmr. UW Faculty)

ECs:
2nd place finish in WA State Science / Engineering Fair, 2019
Caretaker for special needs sibling
Certified SOLIDWORKS associate

I’m not sure exactly how to frame my appeal essay either, so any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

I wouldn’t bet on it. Do you have any other safety schools?

You had your GPA and ECs on the application when they rejected you – what’ve you got that the readers don’t already know?

If you are a Seattle resident and will continue to be a caretaker for your special needs sibling while attending UW, that is a reason why you should be at UW Seattle and not at WSU. Otherwise, all you’ve got so far is the recommendation letter.

Your appeal essay should explain:

  • Why you are a high potential student in ways that weren’t maybe apparent in your first application.
  • Why you need to be at UW Seattle in particular and not another campus that offers your major.

anyone hear back for appeals?

Not yet, we have been waiting for the appeal notifications. Hope we hear on Monday atleast. Does anyone know if they send all CS appeal notifications on the same day?.

i think if you get accepted youll hear the same day but if rejected you wont that day

ugh… i really hope they send these out soon. i read in previous years that they had sent the rejection notices a few days before in some cases but i have no idea

i think theyre gonna come out tomorrow

I just got some data back -

Number of freshman appeals for CS last year: 182
Number of freshman appeals granted for CS last year: 59

doesnt look too bad!

that’s encouraging to hear - I’m curious how COVID will affect those numbers.

someone told me that general admissions is handling appeals instead of CSE this year? idk i really hope CSE is doing it

looks waaaaaaay better than the 55/2400 they accepted OOS. Doesnt look bad at all.

ha it may still not be that great for OOS tbh. i dont know the split by OOS and in state for appeals so im not sure

if anyone gets an email today please let us know

I’m going to guess that in state appeals have a much higher success rate. i may email admissions EOD today if none of you hear anything

i just called them and they gave me the regular “2-4 weeks from submission, so soon” :man_shrugging:

Specifically for CSE?

yeah i asked for CS

interesting, okay! i wonder if they’re going to release them all at once then. I submitted mine on April 10th (before what I am assuming was the deadline on the 15th, it didn’t explicitly state for CSE)
