Hey im thinking about joining a frat and i was just wondering which frats are the best at UW. thanks

Coming out from California, I am curious as well.

I visited last weekend and was walking down Frat Row (17th Ave NE) and we stopped in front of Phi Kappa Sigma (because of the pool). While we were looking around outside, the Rush Chair from last year came by and let me in. I learned that most (if not all) of rushing happens in the summer before freshman year (as it's not a formal rush). Also, almost all the frosh live in the frats during their freshman year. Inside was awesome and I got awesome vibes. Anyways, all 30 or so of the frats look awesome. Like I said, rush is informal, and it lasts all summer. You're just supposed to show up. Any specific questions I MIGHT be able to ask, go ahead and give it a shot.

yeah i heard that about the rushing in the summer. I dont think im even going to apply for dorms now because i know some people from my high school on rush chairs and i know i want to go into a frat, so i dont see any reason to pay the $500 dorm deposit if im going to go into a frat anyways. How do the prices of frats compare to dorms ?

Do sororities rush in the summer as well? How does that work for kids coming from other parts of the country that won't get there until school starts? I've never heard of summer rush. Do they (sororities) have a formal rush during the school year?

Formal rush for sororities occurs before school starts in September. If you visit the UW Greek website www.uwgreeks.com and then click on the link for the sororities (panhellenic) you can find all the info about sorority rush.

Thank you mythreedd!

My son didn't do the summer rush and is kind of regretting it. Does anyone know if any of the fraternities consider adding new members in either fall or winter quarters?

I have a neighbor who rushed last week. He was the last pledge his frat. took, as limit was 30. However, other frats may not be at limit yet? I would either call UW IFC (inter-fraternity council), as they could perhaps give you an overview of status of ALL frats, or go to individual fraternity websites and get hold of their Rush chairman. They could tell you the status of their fraternity, and the chances they will be participating in any rushing through the year. By the way, those calls (especially to frats) should probably be done by your son.

so freshman year's the only time to join a frat?

The vast majority of kids who rush at the UW do it just prior to freshman year. It might be possible (I think-see comment #9) for guys to join at some point later, and I am fairly certain that it can happen later for girls too, but we are speaking about a handful of openings--and probably not at many of the houses that are healthiest/most requested. The time to rush at Washington-for both boys and girls- is prior to beginning freshman year.
