Hi, everybody!
I'm an incoming freshman to UW majoring in computer science.
What classes do typical freshman take? Computer courses?
Or fundemental courses such as math and English?
Haven't been to A&O yet, but wanted to be prepared..
THANKS ANYWAYS

What credit do you have so far? Are you skipping any classes?
If not:
CSE 142, 143
Math 124, 125, 126
English (most people I know took 131), but it is FIG ONLY for autumn quarter.

you’ll be looking at a tight schedule since you haven’t had A&O … just see what you can get. Check the registration page on your myUW page for more info.

Out of curiosity, are you a direct admit student?

Heyyy
THanks!
so I think I don’t have any credit whatsoever,
but I’m going to attend Early Fall Start for a college writing course.
regarding the three classes…
is there an FIG that includes all three of them??
(cuz i haven’t found one yet…
as for direct admitt,
im not really sure what that is.
But I was admitted to UW, and my intended major is computer science.
Does that answer your question??

P.S.
Do you advise taking computer courses in the first quarter?
Should I take some math and physics classes first?

On FIGs: Figs only have 2 classes, plus a 2 credit general studies class. There might be some Math 124/English FIGs left, but I’m not sure if they’re still open.

For admissions into the CS major: [UW CSE Applying to the Computer Science and Computer Engineering Majors](http://www.cs.washington.edu/education/ugrad/forms/programapply.html)

If you scroll down you’ll see what classes you have to take before you can even apply for the major. Since it is a competitive major (less than 40% acceptance rate, according to an advisor last year), I suggest you take these class ASAP, but don’t overload yourself.

If you scroll down to the very bottom, it talks about direct admit. Basically the department admits around 20 CS/20 CE students right out of the freshman application pool every year. Those people got emails from the advisors about direct admit.

I suggest you take at least CSE 142 in the fall. If you end up really hating CS for some reason, you can change paths quickly instead of having math and physics classes for a major that doesn’t require them. From what I’ve heard, the CSE 142 teacher (Marty Stepps) is a great teacher, especially for introductory courses. If you take the B section (at 11:30am) we’ll be in the same CSE 142 lecture :)

Not to be rude or anything…
but it appears that CSE 142 is CSE 142 Computer Programming I (4) NW, QSR
taught by Jessica K Miller??

btw, are you in a FIG??
and would you suggest taking the math course and CS course in the same quarter?
would it be too heavy?

Jessica is teaching summer quarter Marty usually takes the summer off, I guess.
Marty is the instructor for autumn quarter. It’s been finalized and his name is on my course schedule.

I’m not in a FIG, but I am taking Math 124 and CSE 142 together. I don’t think it’ll be too heavy. Just don’t also add on physics, because that would be killer.

On the CSE courses:
[COMPUTER SCIENCE & ENGINEERING](<a href=“University of Washington Time Schedule”>COMPUTER SCIENCE & ENGINEERING)
Scroll down and you’ll see the instructors for the courses for Autumn 2010, as well as the max number of students per lecture/quiz section and how many are currently enrolled.

btw,
have you ever heard of this professor “Jessica K Miller”?
wonder hows her reputation…

so you’re in the one with 340 people?

My friend is taking CSE 142 right now and has Jessica as his professor. He says shes a good teacher, but then again, he does a lot of independent studying (currently taking 21 credits Summer Quarter).

Yes, there are 340 people in my lecture. There are two lectures to choose from, A or B. They’re both taught by Marty this autumn, so you don’t have to worry about which prof to choose from. Just pick whatever is more convenient for your schedule when you also factor in math or anything else you want to take. The single letter sections ‘A’ or ‘B’ are for lectures. For double letter sections ‘AA’ ‘AB’ ‘BB’ ‘BD’ etc, those are quiz sections and you must register for lectures and quiz sections together.

If you are thinking about doing a FIG, there is a FIG with 11 spots open for CSE 142 B. The quiz section is BD. You can find out which quiz sections are reserved for FIG students by checking the notes under the times for each quiz section.

WOW~~m
Thanks for the info:)
just another question…
for a typical freshman schedule,
will it be too much if I have Math 124, CSE 142, and ENG 131 plus the University Community??
Thats 16 credits so I was wondering if thats too much…
yarrrr

I don’t think that will be too much. If I wanted a FIG autumn quarter I would do that as well, haha. You can always change your schedule during the first week of school if it’s too much for you. I’d say go for it :)

cool,
just curious,
are you a freshman as well? whats your name??
direct admit to the computer science program?
looking forward to meeting you ^^

Haha, yeah I’m a freshman as well. Andd I’m not gonna post my name on this forum xP

I’m a direct admit to the CSE program, so hopefully I’ll be seeing you in the future!

just curious…
do you have any computer background in advance??
cuz i haven’t learned any language yet so im kinda nervous…

Yeah, I’ve done basic programming in the past.

Don’t worry about not knowing any languages. It’s a plus, but everyone needs a starting spot at some point, right? It’s pretty easy to learn once you get the hang of the logic. Patience is key!

On top of the courses speedsolver posted, you might want to look into phys 121, 122, 123.
