which one of them would u go for computer science major if u got accepted in all of the above.which one would be the best among them(overall not only academically)?

My personal opinion UW. The reason for that is not only because of the their nationally ranked CS program which outranks Yale and Princeton's cs programs, but they also have ties with some corporations such as Microsoft and Intel. So if you do well during your time at this school, there is a very good chance you'll become a campus-hire.

FYI: Here are some links where I drew my conclusion from.

Good luck! Were you a DA for the CS program?

If you are not a direct admit for computer science at UW, but are at other colleges, you should consider them very strongly. CS is very hard to get into.

is UW that good at undergraduate level at CS? is it really very good?

From my understanding yes, there CS is very good even the undergrad. They only admit 160 computer science and engineering students, including freshman, lower divsion applicants, and transfers applicants, into the program each admission cycle.

Another thing to notate is that their CS building was recently built in 2003, so most of their equiment is up to date, and the teachers in the CS department have recieved numerous teaching awards.

are u sure its only 160 cs,engg students incl freshmen? that means out of a freshmen class of 5100 cs,engg students are apprx only 160??

No. Actually, only 16 freshman students are admitted into the program each year (They are referred to as DA's or direct admission). If you weren't accepted this year as a DA you probably have your majored decalred as "Pre-Science". Even though you weren't accepted, you can always apply for lower division once you meet the prerequistes for the program.

This is because 20% of the 160 applicants are reserved for freshman and since they split the pool to be 80 cse and 80 cs, only 16 applicants. It just goes to show how prestigous their program is!

Oh yeah, all this information can be found on their website!

Rishi,
UW is the choice for computer science..
I am not a DA...but still coming to UW...
Paul Allen's poured in $45m for a new CS building in 2004..
DOS, IMAP, Kerberos, Pine, CP/M all were created at UW..

This will give you a better imporession fo the cs department!

Sharvil, do you intended on majoring in CS?

yes aMeng,
I do intend to major in CS
what about you?

Yup! I am majoring in computer science and may double major in business adminstration or minor in business.

What year was this ranking conducted?

Note that there is a difference between being admitted and enrolled. I believe approximately 75 people were admitted this year with a target of about 20 accepting the offer.

My impression of UW CSE is that it is an excellent program with a strong emphasis on undergraduate research, which is what made it a higher choice for me than other schools who share top rankings.

If you are a Direct Admit, you shouldn't take the offer lightly -- it means that they want you, and you will be getting priority access to one of the strongest CSE departments in the nation.

This is the current year's rankings from US News. They update it every August. There is an annual subscription cost of $16 to access it.

That is awkward because in the uwnews article, posted earlier, it stated the following, "The program in computer science ranked 7th, microbiology ranked 8th, and analytical chemistry was 10th. Computer science specialties ranked were artificial intelligence (5) programming language (6), systems (6), and theory (10)" according to the US News Reports?

aMeng, the UWnews article is for grad school rankings, the long list posted above is for Undergrad engineering ranks.

Oooo, thanks!

yes that was what i was thinking

the link i gave mentioned (uwnews) 7th for CS..
