Hello CC,

I am currently at a University of Wisconsin 2 year college and have the option of doing the guaranteed transfer to a 4 year college to finish my Bachelor's in Computer Science. I will be graduating this upcoming spring 2013. I am making the decision of either Green Bay or Milwaukee.

I live about halfway in between the 2 cities and will most likely be commuting due to owning a home in the city I live in. There may be the possibility we sell and move, but I'm going to work with this scenario for the time being.

I am looking for pros and cons of these two schools for a Computer Science major. One of my concerns is traffic commuting and qualify of education. I have been leaning towards UW-GB, but am curious if I would get a much better education at Milwaukee.

Thanks for anyone who can give me pros and cons of for my major and any other information you'd like to share to help me make my decision. Thanks again in advance!

Milwaukee has ABET accreditation in CS; Green Bay does not.

Look carefully at the upper division course offerings at each school to see which ones fit your interests the best. Look especially carefully at those offered at Green Bay, since non-ABET-accredited CS degree programs can range from among the very best to very limited (ABET-accreditation sets a minimum standard that is decent).

Consider the following course offerings:

Algorithms and complexity *+
Theory of computation +
Operating systems *+
Compilers +
Software engineering *
Security and cryptography *
Databases *
Computer architecture +
electives in your areas of interest beyond those listed above (e.g. graphics, artificial intelligence, etc.) *+

= good for industry software jobs

= good for preparing for graduate school

Thanks for the reply, I though ABET doesn’t really matter for compsci majors? Does anyone else have anything they can add to help me??

For CS, ABET accreditation is not generally needed per se, except in niche areas like patent law. However, it can serve as a quick validation that the CS degree program is at least decent quality. I.e. ABET-accredited => anywhere from decent to excellent, while non-ABET-accredited => anywhere from poor to excellent.

Does anyone have experience with UW-GBs Comp Sci program? ?
