UW Honor Program

I'm considering the Honors Program at UW and had a couple questions..

1)If I don't get admitted to the Honors Program, will I not have a chance at UW at all? Meaning will I be denied from the regular UW school?

2) What are the advantages of the UW Honors Program?

3) How busy are UW Honors students compared to the regular UW students? Do they have time to do other activities?

4) Do I have a chance at the UW Honors Program?

I'll be applying before Nov 28.

Your stats are around (a bit above) the averages for admitted students, so you should be alright for the regular school. I’m not familiar with the honors program, but I found these stats on their website:
Incoming Freshmen, 2009
•Total applications: 2,723
•Admitted to Honors: 704
•Enrolled in UW Honors: 224
•Average Highschool GPA: 3.92
•Average SAT: 2060
•Average ACT: 30

do you mean suburb of Washington D.C.? or a suburb in Washington State? Because being instate could help you tremendously. it is harder to get in from oos.

@coug: thanks for the stats! so… for the honors program, i’d be lucky if I got in?

@spaceneedle: Suburb of Washington state

Whether or not you get in is really going to be up to your essay. If you really do have an incredible essay, I would say you have a shot. But I applied to honors last year with a 4.0 UW GPA, 2020 SAT/31 ACT, and what I thought was a good essay, and was denied. I have met a girl who had a lot lower stats than me, who got in, so I guess it mostly comes down to whether or not you have a really amazing essay (I’m assuming she did).

ok, since you’re instate you’ll get in but I don’t know about the honors program.

:( No Honors for me?

No problem. I’ll still be satisfied with regular UW. haha

I have heard different views about honors program.

On the positive side, you get a chance to attend a wide variety of courses taught exclusively for honors students. Most of these classes tend to be smaller than the ones regualars attend during first two years.

My son has applied and he will most likely get. The advice we got from one of the profs in bioengineering dept. is that this is not a good program if one wants to focus on science or engineering. Departmental honors is just as good - you don’t have to take unncessary liberal arts courses. He said many kids who get into university honors program struggle to maintain good GPA and that seriously hurts their chances to get into good graduate programs.
