UW in-state or UVA out-of-state?

I know this board is filled with Badger pride, but I'm wondering if there's anyone who, if given the choice all over again, would have chosen to attend school somewhere else. My options are: attend UW with in-state tuition rates (well, close enough, b/c I'm from MN), or attend the University of Virginia out-of-state (but most likely with very competitive financial aid). UVA is ranked at or near the top of public schools by most academic rankings, but UW is also very high. Plus, the low tuition is great. What would you do, knowing what you know now about your experiences at UW?

UW is stronger in sciences and engineering. Uva is a little better in some liberal arts. Not really much difference.

i would say DEFINITELY UVA! if i had the chance to get into UVA, i would take advantage of it because it's an amazing school! even with the aide...you can't put a price on an excellent education

UVa is not all that amazing. It lacks world-class scientists and many facilities are old and not up to snuff. The only thing it really has going for it is the smaller size that makes admissions very tough.

You might want to look at some factual data on the two.

Although Arb is right in stating that UVA is an excellent school, well, so is UW. I'm surprised that another state school would be that competitive in financial aid, however.

What is your intended major? While UVA ranks slightly higher, the difference is marginal. If you're planning on going to graduate school, I don't see much difference between the two.

Personally I would make this decision based entirely on finances. The two schools are just too similar in terms of opportunities available for one to be worth greater student loan debt than the other.
