UW-Madison...borderline/anxious!

I really want to go to this school, I have little interest in others.

GPA: 3.4
ACT: 26

Senior year will be taking an AP science class

EC's
Art Club

junior varsity: football, lacrosse
varsity: track and field
play in a community basketball league

Work Experience
4th grade sports camp counselor

Service Work
Have participated in my schools service program regularly

I'm not a minority and live in Illinois.

I hope to earn very good grades this upcoming Senior year as I am motivated to get into UW-Madison. My gpa is .1 below their average and my ACT is right on par. What do you think?

It doesn't look too good. I hope you raise your ACT score.

Don't worry. My friend got admitted only with an 1800ish SAT and as an international student.

What's your intended major?

The chart says 50%, but it hasn't been updated in a while (note the median is 26-30 ACT, and it's likely higher). I'd say postponed unless you improve your ACT.

A couple of questions which might change that:

What does your schedule look like?
How competitive is your school? Does it offer AP classes beyond what you are taking?
Does your school rank? (assume not because not posted)
What sets you apart from all the other people applying there? You have a chance to get in, but there is nothing on your app that other people don't have.

Essays will be critical. Make sure you do both personal statements.

Ryan: My intended major is Business.

And about your friend who got in surprisingly, the same thing happened with my cousin last year, I didn't think she would get in as she was average and she did, so that gives me confidence.

toshimelonhead:
The above average classes that I had to be reccomended for on my schedule this upcoming year will inlcude AP Environmental Science, Economics, and Honors Studio Art II. My other classes are basic.

My school is pretty competetive and has a great reputation as a College Prep. Academy, and ofcourse I'll be getting all the neccessary teacher (2) and counselor reccomendations. (also, I do not know my class rank)

What I plan on writing about is the fact that I am a leader in the Art Club, and the fact that I found a new love for track & field after not making basketball. Those are two things I can think off the top of my head right now.

Thank you for your feedback.

Raise your ACT by a point or two and you have a shot. Otherwise, you might want to look into UMN--Twin Cities.

He's gonna study statistics.
Maybe your major is a little bit more competitive than his, regarding the fact that UW Madison has a very good economics program (don't know much about the business school there).

Since I'm new to the college process, will they be able to see my senior grades?

Anybody else? I'll be applying Early Decision.

You should apply now, even though UW-Madison says apply as early as possible AFTER September 15th, since you actually can apply as early as September 1st when the online application system becomes available. They won't look at your application until September 15th if everything is in (counselor form, transcript, recommendation letters). Are your parents college graduates? If not, that can help you. Take the ACT again in October. Take advantage of the personal essays, perhaps explain that your grades have an upward trend (if you got off to a bad start freshmen year). Good luck. You can always try to transfer in to Madison as a sophomore if you don't get in Freshman year.

Just an fyi on Madison's business school: you enter business as a junior if you meet their academic standards and have taken all the prerequisites. My son is a sophomore there this year and is taking a math/pre-business-heavy load this year in anticipation of applying to the business school next semester.

If you are postponed, don't assume that's a bad thing. The school has a heavy application load and will get to you and your application later in the year. On their website, not sure where, is a newsletter they did a couple of years ago that addresses commonly-held misconceptions about their admissions process. See if you can find that...it has some very honest info about the process that helps demystify it.

Good luck with your application!

For people admitted to UW Madison for Summer 2008 and later, the application process to the business school has changed. You now apply to the business school after having completed 24 credits in residence which include 4 specific pre-business courses.
