I am interested in the UWM BS/MS program. I am an instate resident, and I've checked their website, googled it, searched the forums....but I can't find anything about where to apply/some info about it, besides the fact that it exists. Could I get some help from you guys? thanks!

Actually, it does not exist anymore. UW believes that since its medical school is becoming so good, there is no need to reserve a bunch of spots for high school students who haven't even taken any college classes yet when they can fill these spots with higher caliber college students who have proven themselves worthy of admission. The last year it was available was for the Class of 2011 (high school class of 2007).

Indy500 that is your own opinion.

i would say oreo45 that indy500 made a pretty reasonable inference. Before, UW Madison undergrad tended to gain a lot of good from the program. But, it wasnt really helping the med school anymore ,so they dropped it. (i'm a WI resident, so i know al ot about the program)Nevertheless, although it may be indy's opinion about why it doesnt exist, the point is that it doesnt anymore.

No it is actually not my opinion. I know a couple students from my school (Class of 2007) who are currently in the program...they told me that they asked madison why they are discontinuing the program and this is the reason they gave. I believe it completely too since the program was only available for wisconsin residents. The med school is on par with other top medical schools who offer medical scholars programs (Northwestern, Brown, Rice, Case Western), yet since the program was only available for wisconsin residents, it could not be nearly as selective as these other universities.

Yours and their opinion.

Oreo45, are you just playing "devil's advocate"?

Nonetheless, there are real concerns with accepting high school students into medical school, not the least of which are attrition and poor performance in med school.

HPME is unabashed in noting that is BS/MD students perform worse than its regular med students:

The school would like to reduce the program to 20 students per year, with 12 to 15 admitted in the standard manner as freshmen and 5 to 8 admitted as sophomores. This will help address some deficiencies related to academic performance of some HPME students and improve the overall diversity of the medical school class, since few minorities enter on this pathway.

Throw in the fact last year's med school class had the strongest stats ever, it's not surprising that med schools are choosing to admit less from the HS pool and more from the college pool.

Yes...my opinion, the students', and the school's program coordinators'.

Exactly as norcalguy said....although at least northwestern accepts students who are absolutely the creme of the crop of the applicant pool...madison couldn't accept the ABSOLUTE best students out there coz it was only available for wisconsin residents.
