One of my top choices is UW Madison and I was wondering if they give out lots of financial aid for out of state students and how to get it. I don't have a lot of money and I really really like this school, but if it comes down to money I might not be able to go.

It’s fine to have UW as one of your choices, as long as you have some other schools on your list that you know you can afford and that will take you. UW does not guarantee to meet full need, and does not do so. Usually OOS kids do not fare as well in terms of aid since that extra revenue received from the OOS premium is one reason these schools like having a number of such students.

UW is a public school for the residents in that state. The reason it charges high OOS rates is because your parents don’t pay taxes there. Why would it BOTHER to charge high OOS rates if that meant that it then has to COVER those high rates with FA? Why bother charging the high rates?

Have your parents run the NPC on UWisconsin’s website and see what results you get.
