UW-Madison or UC San Diego

Hello to the CC community. I’m a current high school student admitted to both Madison and San Diego. I would like to know what you guys think of both of the schools. I would like to major in Business, which I guess Madison is much stronger (with their business school) than San Diego. However, SD has a really nice campus and the location is amazing. If I choose SD, then I might need to take Economics instead. What do you guys think when comparing both of the schools in terms of their reputation, academics, location, the standard of living, campus life. Any advice would be appreciated…

Are you from out of state or in CA? Big difference in out of state costs in a public school. UW-Madison has a good undergraduate business school, top 15 to 20. UCSD is ranked higher overall than UW, #37 vs. #46 in US News. UW is in the Big 10 sports conference and has a lot of school spirit UCSD is more known for STEM and has some strong non STEM departments.

@UCBUSCalum
I am OOS for both so the price is pretty similar. Would you consider UC San Diego strong for there Economics Department?

UCSD’s management economics is more quantitative focus. business analytics, etc. You can take some finance electives. However, if you want to take more in depth classes in business, finance, accounting, marketing, human resources, international business, information systems, etc., business school is the better option. UW-Madison has an excellent undergraduate business school, but the weather there is not as nice as sunny San Diego.

@UCBUSCalum Do you think the economics department at UCSD is strong?

The UCSD, like UW-Madison, is strong. In fact, it is probably a toss up. A couple of years ago, both UCSD and UW were ranked at 12 for graduate level by US News. Usually undergrad piggyback off graduate. Notable schools also ranked 12 were UCLA, Michigan. Top tier schools in economics would be Harvard, Yale, MIT, Berkeley, Stanford, Princeton, Columbia, Chicago…
