UW-Madison vs UIUC vs UW Seattle?

I've been accepted at Wisconsin and Illinois, and I'm expecting that I'd get accepted at Washington.

These 3 are my backup schools since other schools I applied to are all Ivies + Stanford, etc (no telling whether or not I'd get in).

Anyway, if I don't get in HYPS etc, which is better for Maths--Wisconsin, Illinois, or Washington?

Also, which is more prestigious?

Thanks!

**I'm an international student from Asia btw

UIUC

Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using CC

mls4037- Why UIUC? Is the NON-Engineering dept of UIUC renowned too?

All three schools will be pretty similar in terms of prestige and academics.
Just pick the one that fits you best.

Which school has more prestige and better alumni network in your country? The campus environments are quite different among the three; which one fits you better?

As you are from Asia, U of Washington-Seattle has an edge in travel and cost so there is another consideration.

UIUC - best name recognition
Wisconsin - rising fastest
UW - good in math

But overall, they are almost the same. None can be said to be better or worse than the others.

I disagree. I think Wisconsin has the strongest brand outside of Engineering. All three are excellent universities though. I personally would recommend going with cost and fit. In terms of cost, I think all three will be roughly the same. In terms of environment, if you like big cities, UDub is ideal, if you prefer a nice college town, Madison is hard to beat. For Mathematics, all three have strong departments, with Wisconsin edging the other two out, but only by the tiniest of margins.

Prestige wise…I think Wisconsin Madison is a BIT more prestigious than UIUC…and both Wisconsin Madison and UIUC are a lot more prestigious than UW. I am from Asia too and it’s obvious here that people know UW Madison and UIUC a lot more and recognized more than UW Seattle. So, prestige, name-recognition goes to UW Madison and UIUC. Good schools!

Thanks for all the replies. This decision is really a toss up for me.

UIUC - I really like my major here, but what turns me off is the 67% acceptance rate and the fact that not too many people in my country know about the school

UW Madison - seems the most “elite” but Asian percentage is too little and I don’t think I’ll fit well (then again I haven’t visited the campus yet)

UW Seattle - A LOT of Asians (makes me feel at home) but yeah I think prestige-wise it’s the least among the 3? (not sure)

Wisconsin has 30,000 undergraduate students. You will really have to try hard not to fit in. With over 1,500 undergraduate students of Asian background and approximately 1,700 undergraduate students from overseas, most of which will be Asian, close to 10% (±3,000 undergraduate students) of the student population should be Asian or of Asian origin. That should be more than sufficient.

“UIUC - I really like my major here, but what turns me off is the 67% acceptance rate and the fact that not too many people in my country know about the school.”

Interesting to hear that. UIUC has the probably the largest international population of any public school in the United States. It is very well known in Asia as a very strong engineering school. That being said, Wisconsin is probably the most prestigious of the three schools and is not “rising fastest” as was stated by BuBBLES FoR SALE. Wisky has been a top academic school for many decades.

Actually for over a century.

Yes I know barrons. I figured I’d get you to chime in with that remark. ;-)

Wisconsin Madison has a decent amount of diversity and international students. I know at least 6-10 alumni from my school that go to Wisconsin Madison and looking at their pictures…they fit in PERFECTLY with the other asians haha. I worry about the asian population too…and Wisconsin is nice! UIUC does have TONS of asians though haha

I would go to Wisky; it seems like it has a ton of school spirit which might appeal to you.

I would say these three schools are all about equal.

Therefore, I wouldn’t select one or the other just because you think one is more prestigious than the other.

They are so close that any difference in prestige is neglible, and really, a matter of subjective opinion.

There are more important reasons to select one over the other.

FYI. US News Ranks them as follows:

Washington 42
Wisconsin 42
Illinois 45

So this is more confirmation that they are roughly equal in prestige. So forget about prestige. Look at other factors in making your decision. That being said, I would say that each school is more “prestigious” in its own backyard. So if you have a particular desire to work in a particular area of the country, that might be a factor.
