UW-Madison vs. Univ. Washington-Seattle

Actually they cut the acceptance rate from 56% to 50% and then found that was going too far. They took about 600 from the waitlist.

nocousin, I've lived in Seattle my entire life, and I can assure you, it's always been pretty liberal, although it has gotten moreso in the last 30 years. A ranking of America's most liberal cities from 2005, compiled by the Bay Area Center for Voting Research:

Seattle is ranked 16th, Madison 34th. I'm very sensitive to the liberal leanings, since I tend to lean the other way.

The plaque hasn't been that readable since that picture was taken, which looks something like 1965.

Bet UDub can't match this:

Wisconsin Historical Society | Wisconsin Historical Images

1,000 plastic lawn flamingos is indeed hard to top. :)

I personally preferred the other great Pail & Shovel party icon -- Lady Liberty sinking into Lake Mendota.

Image:Libertymendota.jpg - Wikimedia Commons

We do know how to have fun in Wisconsin. ;)

Apparently the Pail and Shovel Party as one of their planks promised to bring the Statute of Liberty to Madison, which they did. I recall reading that a bunch of, let's say more conservative (not in the political sense) students burned it to the ground. The Pail and Shovel people had it rebuilt.

Definitely cool.

Haha, I can see you Wisconsans? Wisconsinites? really love your hijinks! That picture of Lady Liberty reminds me of the movie, The Day After Tomorrow.

plastic lawn flamingos.....something dear to my heart. lol.

jaf: I lean conservative as well. I was in seattle likely before you were born...in the 70's. It wasnt all that liberal "overall" back then....eclectic and earthy...but a fairly conservative town compared to now. A lot has changed.

Anyway...its hard to get into a comparison on liberal vs. conservative.

People have to visit and decide for themselves if they want to go to school somewhere...for whatever reason suits their fancy.

Don't forget, UWis also invented the Onion.

nocousin, I graduated from high school in 1973 in Renton, Washington. Jokes on you! From my point of view, it's always been liberal...left leaning...far, far left leaning. Ever heard of the Soviet of Washington?

I'm applying to both schools. Washington is pretty easy to get into, I hear Wisconsin is a little more selective. Right now, I have Washington above Wisconsin, but I haven't been to Madison yet to tour the campus.

I'm a CA resident and I applied to both. I preferred Wisconsin because it was slightly cheaper and has a very strong Journalism program (which is my major). I never got the chance to visit, but everything I've heard about it points to it being one of the best college towns in the nation. Plus, they're almost annually top 25 in football/basketball if that's of any importance to you.

Btw, I got waitlisted at both schools. I'm heading to UC Irvine. However, I did get off the waitlist for Wisconsin in late-June. If it weren't for money and the fact that I still hadn't visited the campus, I might have gone.

My Stats were:

3.33 UW GPA, 3.88 Weighted GPA
2030 SAT (W: 680, M: 680, W: 670)
SAT II's: US History=740, Literature=580

No eye opening EC's. Needless to say I was a bit of a slacker. At least this gives you a frame of reference. Hopefully your admissions decisions to these schools turn out better than mine.

Yeah that's the problem with me. I'm not sure I'll be able to get into Wisconsin, and Washington seems rather unlikely as well.

Okay.....jaf. I hear ya. But if you think Seattle was far, far left leaning in the 70's, then you must be far, far right and not just leaning right. LOL.

Seattle is "out there now" in my books. Hostile to conservatives is a better term. Downright "angry" at anything remotely conservative. I digress.

It is what it is. I shut my mouth when I am in town on business. I sip my coffee at Seattle's Best Coffee (better than Starbucks) and keep my mouth shut.

Back in the 70's Seattle had a lively Republican Party, a Republican Governor and City Council.

Take that Seattle.

The Seattle region has been liberal for ages and only more so today. Remember it's the home of Trim Bissell (a 1960s weather underground type bomber), the Love Israel commune, non-partisan municipal elections, voluntary school busing for racial integration, Indian Treaty fishing rights, etc.

jafi1991...are you a Lindbergh Eagle, Hazen Highlander or Mighty Renton Indian?

I am a mighty Renton Indian. I don't believe Lindbergh had graduated a class yet in 1973. What part of the area do you hail from?

nocousin, I'm going to continue this conversation in the Parent Cafe, where it belongs.
