I am really pushing to attend UW-MAdison with subpar stats. The normal student at the school has around a 3.5-3.7 with a 27-29 ACt. I have a 3.2 GPA with a 26 on the ACT. If UW-Madison alumi write me letters of recommendation and I possibly interview do you think I would have a shot at being accepted. I also plan to write a killer essay and continue to add activities and volunteer time to my application.

Yeah sorry to bring you down but you probably won't get in. Try retaking the ACT and working really hard the rest of the year and you might have a chance.

it kind of sucks that its so tough to get in for being a state school. but who knows maybe ill get lucky, otherwise maybe ill just transfer in.

Yea I was rejected with my 3.4 and 23 which I figured would happen.

Try applying to University of Minnesota though, if your from Wisconsin it's pretty cheap.

I'm looking at the UW Madison naviance scattergram for my school and it says taht someone was accepted with a 10.0/12.0 gpa (so a 3.3ish) and a 21 ACT. this person could have been an athlete though. the next lowest acceptances are a 10.0 gpa (again around a 3.3) with at 27 ACt. there is also a person with a 25 ACT and 11.5/12.0 gpa. keep in mind each of these acceptances is surrouned by dozens of red x's (meaning rejections). all you can do is try and see what happens!

im assuming youve visited there and if you did you should have gotten a sheet that you can calculate your percent chance of getting in according to your grades and scores. its not looking too promising, but if you can get some amazing recs and ur class rank isnt bad you have a shot. o n i dont wanna be mean but you probly wont get into minnesota either, especially now. there are people on the minnesota forum getting rejected with 3.5 gpa and 27 act, and thats just the liberal arts school. but dont underestimate the other UW schools, a few are really up to par in several programs.

well i know other minnesota residents who got into the U of M with very low grades. Otherwise im looking at Iowa U,Iowa State,North Dakota, Or UM-Duluth. I know I can get into these schools but i just wish I could go to Madison so bad.

I have not visited UW Mdison yet

I was a Minnesota student and, though I didn’t do very well at high school due to family issues (alcoholism/abuse), I moved out at the age of 16 and participated in the Post-Secondary Enrollment Options program. I studied at the Minnesota State Community and Technical College one year and the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities for one semester. I graduated from high school with 51 college credits, a collective college GPA of 3.97, a high school GPA of 3.45, an ACT score of 28 (science section hit me pretty hard), while having made the Dean’s List three semesters in a row, having been a member of both college’s honor programs, Phi Theta Kappa, Den Norske Klubben, and US Chuan Fa. I took the most rigorous courses that interested me (for instance: Historical Linguistics and a course on Epistemology/Metaphysics) and fought hard to undue the years when I could not concern myself with my schooling. In two years I raised my high school GPA by 0.50.

I detailed all of this in my application which was bolstered by three letters of recommendation from three college professors (one who stated that in his 21 years of teaching, he has never met a better student), but nevertheless, the University of Wisconsin-Madison rejected me.

I appealed their decision with the support of two letters of recommendation from their own professors from within the Scandinavian Studies department (whom I had met with and consulted for guidance in my own personal studies in Old Icelandic and Modern Norwegian) as well as my own letter of appeal. After about six months, I received a reply. I was rejected again. Never was I given a reason, though one of those two professors told me she heard something about me not having enough years of a foreign language. I’m a linguistics and Scandinavian Languages major. Ironic?

My experiences tell me that they don’t read the letters or your writing. So much for their “holistic evaluation.”

I know someone, a Wisc resident who was accepted to UW Madison with a 22 ACT, a 3.8 GPA, a DUI and 2 MIPs. This is a small hope for myself who received a 22 ACT. I also have a 3.8 GPA and am involved in many activities. I also have hyperthyroidism, which is sometimes hard to work with.
