So I've always heard the rumor that it's difficult to get into UW medicine if you go to UW. But I can't necessarily find data to support or refute that other than this site.

University of Washington School of Medicine: Admissions, Tuition, Rankings and Average MCAT Scores

Instate: 227
OOS: 40

Does in-state cater to WWAMI? or Just Washington, because the numbers seem to go against this rumor, I just want to know if anyone else has something to say, because UW med is ranked extremely high, and I feel like there are much more qualified out of state kids that should be accepted, which would follow the rumor? But these stats say otherwise?

I heard that rumor too and it is somewhat true. I heard recently from an UW professor that he is really surprised that one of his students got accepted into UW medical school. But I also know a girl who went to UW undergradute and later went to UW medical school after taking a ‘gap’ year being in the military( not just enlisted, but trained with group of guys).

Don’t know if it is true or not, but at our tour of Western, they claimed that a higher percentage of Western pre-med students are accepted at UW medical school than UW pre-med students.

cellopop, is that percentage of the UWMS class of 20XX? Or percent of Western compared to percent of UW? There are probably a LOT more UW pre-med students, so a low percentage of UW students going to UWMS compared to Western would make sense.

I’ve also heard that for most state schools, they prefer non-undergraduates while private schools prefer to retain their undergraduates for medical school.

I heard that too but I think it’s untrue. It’s just hard to get into, period.

It was just a passing comment, so no idea how it was calculated. I would assume they meant that of the pre-med students at Western that apply to med school at UW, compared the the pre-med students at UW that apply to med school at UW, a higher percentage of the Western students are accepted.

But you can prove just about any point with how you take your measurement, so who knows.
