Alright heres my situation.
Recently I was offered admission to UCLA as well as University of Washington's Foster School of Business. I currently live in Seattle so I would be able to get in-state tuition at UW as opposed to the very expensive out of state tuition for UCLA. Right now my interests are centered in the business field, yet they may change with time, who knows. I visited UCLA last weekend and absoluteley loved the atmosphere and feel of the campus, yet the price of tuition is sort of a drawback.

Anyone have any advice on which college would be better to attend? I am aware UCLA does not have an undergraduate business school yet they do have their BIZECON major which parrallels business school curriculum. Would UCLA hold better clout with future employers? Without factoring in the difference in tuition, which school would be better for pursuing a business related education?

Ok, from advice I've heard, for business, the "prestige" of the school tend to matter a lot when you either go to business school or when you start to work. Also, since business majors tend to make a lot of money, I don't think finance should be TOOO big of an issue here. So therefore, I would pick the school that 1) you think fit with you better and 2) has a better business program.

The difference in total cost/year is about 30k$. I have a sister who is a year younger that will be attending college next year, so most likeley a certain amount of loans will need to be taken out.

Keep in mind that your family will have 2 college students once your sister starts, so your EFC will be divided by 2 for three of your four years of college. That may significantly change your total cost per year.

No brainer here. It's UW. It is NOT worth spending an extra $120K to go to UCLA, and that's probably a low estimate. In case you haven't been following the CA papers the state is facing a huge budget deficit and they're already talking about hiking tuition at the UCs. Since the primary purpose is to educate CA residents, I wouldn't be surprised if it skyrockets for OOS.

The UC schools are a good deal for in-state kids, but I don't see how you can justify paying $40K+ a year for a somewhat impersonal education when that same money would buy you smaller classes, better advising, and a more personal environment at a good private.

What's going to matter more to your future is what you do in school. Good grades, participate in clubs and activities, spend time going to office hours to take advantage of the advice your profs can offer, and most important get some career experience such as internships. Do those things and you'll be fine.

And in case you think I have an axe to grind against UCLA, I don't; that's why I wrote the thread that's listed in the "featured discussions" at the top of the UCLA page.

I would go to UW in this case. Good school, good price. I'm definitely not an anti-UC person... definitely not. I just don't see why you should start your adult life with tens of thousands of dollars in debt just for a name. UW is great and you'll thrive.
