Any suggestions for cold/wet weather gear? Child is new to the climate and I am looking for style and brand suggestions as gifts. Thanks.

Seattle weather is neither cold nor wet.

Is this for a son or for a daughter?

Also, yes, it’s definitely cold and wet here – it’s not Minnesota cold and there (usually) aren’t torrential downpours, but the kid will need a rain coat and a warm jacket.

Helly Hansen and North Face are the most popular brands =)

Marmot and REI have very nice shells (thin jacket you wear above whatever you’re wearing that’s water proof) as well as warm jackets. I agree with North Face (and very comfy!) although those can be pretty pricey - I’d wait for sales to get one.

Invest in a nice umbrella. Yeah, yeah, I’ve heard the whole “Seattle natives don’t use umbrellas.” Whatever. I love my umbrella, and people use them on campus all the time unless it’s bright, sunny, and dry.

I’ve started wearing scarves and gloves (I also commute, so waiting for my transfer can get very chilly). Don’t underestimate the cold weather, especially if your child is not familiar with it. Better safe than sorry! It’s terrible being sick, especially if the courses are going at a very fast pace.

Agreed, speedsolver. Not carrying an umbrella doesn’t make you a “native Seattleite”-- it makes you stupid and wet.

Also, have appropriate shoes with good traction, especially for the wet days. In particular, the Red Square bricks get very slippery. A good number of freshmen/transfers who didn’t know this slip and fall!
