UW Seattle Major (PLEASE HELP)

I am an international Indian high school student who applied to UW Seattle for the fall of 2019.

I was accepted as a pre-major to the college of ARTS AND SCIENCES even though I had applied for mechanical engineering.

not even to pre-engineering, to pre-science.

Is this a mistake? should I not be in pre-engineering at least? My stats were DEFINITELY good enough for pre-engineering…

should I contact them?

My sister, who had applied for EE, got into Engineering Undeclared with admittedly lower stats. Now, say if I do plan to attend there (most likely not now), what would be the next steps? Is all hope lost for engineering? Or is there something I can do?

Thank you for answering.

You can appeal the decision:

Congratulations to you and your sister, and good luck!

This will help to understand what you were accepted to

https://admit.washington.edu/apply/admission-to-majors/

Not to discourage you but here’s some info in their FAQ (https://www.engr.washington.edu/admission/directtocollege/faq).

If I do not receive Direct to College admission, what chances do I have of being admitted later?

“Some applicants who select an engineering major on their UW application will be admitted to the UW but not admitted Direct to College. Students who are not admitted Direct to College, but are admitted to the UW, will be admitted as pre-science or pre-major in the College of Arts & Sciences. If your objective is to study engineering and you did not receive Direct to College admission, it would be wise to consider other engineering schools. Admission to engineering departments is highly competitive for students not admitted directly to the College of Engineering.”

Oh ok, I understand now. Well, UW is out of my considerations now anyway, thank you for answering!
