Does this school have a "top-notch" math department? Or it sucks? Where does it rank among other universities?

I'm not sure about the official rankings, but I do know some bits about the UW math department that suggests that it's pretty good.

We've had, in the past 4 years, 5 teams classified as "Outstanding", in the Mathematical Contest for Modeling. Out of ~662 teams per year, nationwide, usually around 10 are classified as "Outstanding".

In terms of scholarships, this year, there were 2 Goldwater scholars from the UW math deparment, and 1 Rhodes scholar (who's my math TA, btw).

We also have a really good REU. And, though this doesn't really say whether the department is good academically, the teachers and advisors are very willing to let qualified undergrads into grad-level math courses. I'm a freshman now, and I've just been told that I'll be able to take 4 graduate-level courses, in complex analysis and (partial and ordinary, linear and nonlinear) differential equations next year. Feel free to PM me if you have any more questions.
