UW Seattle (Pre-Sciences) vs Purdue (Exploratory Studies)

Good evening everyone, recently I got accepted into both Purdue and UW Seattle, and am currently debating between attending either Purdue or UW Seattle. I got accepted into both universites ‘undecided’ (though I applied to UW for computer science and computer engineering, but got assigned to pre-science, versus being waitlisted at Purdue and changing major to Exploratory Studies), and I’m not sure which to attend. As previously mentioned, I’m planning to pursue a CS or Computer Engineering-related degree, though other engineering options aren’t completely out of the picture. Here are some advantages and disadvantages for each university from my point of view (I won’t talk about rankings for the moment since there are so many different sources):

UW Seattle:

  • Advantage: My brother is also accepting admission into UW Seattle (though direct-to-major bio-engineering, envious), and housing will be significantly easier since my extended family owns some property around Seattle, which hopefully allows us to save on room and board costs.
  • Advantage: ‘Supposedly’ UW’s computer science and computer engineering majors are easier to get into, something around 30-40%; I haven’t found some exact figures for Purdue yet, but I’ve heard that transferring from a non-engineering major through colleges into engineering is already difficult, let alone transferring into a competitive major like CS or computer engineering.
  • Advantage: Seattle is growing really fast in the technology sector, so I’m thinking that getting internships at UW would be easier than at Purdue which is located somewhere less urban (though my father told me that many companies send representatives over to Purdue as well, so I’m not exactly sure).

Purdue:

  • Advantage: From my father’s point of view, Purdue’s computer science and computer engineering programs are both supposedly more prestigious than the programs within UW; also, I’m pretty sure their engineering majors in general are also higher ranked, thus if I don’t get into computer engineering I still have some other majors to choose from.
  • Advantage: As I mentioned earlier, my father states that more high-tech companies head to Purdue for internship opportunities than that of UW, though my information may be incorrect. Anyhow, I heard that many high-tech companies recruit interns from Purdue, so attending Purdue might land me more internship opportunities and maybe a return offer.

I also appealed to Georgia Tech after a recent grade reconsideration, but haha … nope, still rejected. Worth a try, though.

Appealed to Berkeley as well and still waiting on a response - people who have attended Berkeley, is transferring from L&S into computer science really that competitive? I’m not too great at studying, and although I’m fairly sure I’ll mature after some months attending university, I still fear for my sanity competing within Berkeley. On the off-chance that I get accepted. is attending Berkeley worth it? How about UCSD (also waitlisted, lmao)?

Thanks to everyone for their input; best of luck!

Also wanted to note that while my SAT/SAT II/ACT was decently high, my GPA was down in the drain towards my junior and senior year (3.6 unweighted and 4.6 weighted) versus to my standardized testing. To all freshmen/sophomore/juniors high-schoolers out there, don’t give up on your academics! You’re never truly done - you may have heard this a million times already, but don’t throw away your academics just because of one or two blunder years. The brief moment of fun and games aren’t worth the huge consequence. Good luck!

With the new direct to college system at UW, it is expected to be very hard for someone who did not get college of engineering admission to get in to any engineering major, including Computer Engineering. All “Engineering Undeclared” students will be matched to engineering before any spots are available for others.

Computer science is your option from pre-science, and it is very competitive. If you’re “not too great at studying,” someone else will outcompete you for your spot in CS, too. Don’t go to UW unless you plan to work hard.

the likelihood of you being able to study CS at UW is nil. there is too much competition for too few spots.
Go to Purdue.

CS at both schools is highly competitive to change into after enrolling as undeclared:

Are there any other colleges that you were admitted to?

Here is some information for admitted students who are interested in CS and related majors at the University of Washington:

Bump if that’s allowed?
