<p>How does this compare to cuts being taken by other public universities? Is this a common occurance nowadays, or something uw students and faculty should be worried about? I haven’t heard of these kinds of actions being taken by public universities which could draw top faculty away from uw and affect it’s reputation, no?</p>
<p>No, Washington, Florida, California and lots of others are doing it. Given its funding structure UW could easily have afforded not to do it but the Guv wanted all the state employees treated equally–even those not actually paid by the state $$$$.</p>
<p>This is much less burdensome than for universities in other states (NC, AZ, WA, CA for example) many of which are facing disastrous cuts. Unionized classified employees will be getting their 2% pay raises although they too will be getting the 3% cut. Non-represented state employees will not be getting any raises. There is speculation that the next biennium could be worse.</p>
