UW Transfer- What are my odds? (Autumn 2019)

Hi all,

I’m looking to transfer into UW’s Asian Studies program in the fall (I’ll be a junior by then). Here are my stats:

3.36 cumulative GPA (improved each semester, 3.6 last semester)
Strong personal statement (well-defined goals, my current university has a very limited Asian Studies program. UW would give me more opportunities to learn Korean/pursue Asian Studies).
9 months of part-time work experience at a large company on top of school.
I’m in the honors program at my current school.
Currently majoring in a mixture of Philosophy/PoliSci
-I don’t have many Asian Studies credits since my school’s program is limited. I’m studying abroad in Seoul at the moment and am taking some right now. Not sure exactly how these will transfer to UW, and if this will be an issue.
Also- I’m coming from a 4-year out of state university. I went to high school/grew up in WA (not sure how/if this will impact admissions at all).

Also- I have an opportunity to conduct some partially funded research at my current institution (self-built project related to Asian Studies- I hear back if I get it or not before I get my UW transfer decision back). Wondering if it’s worth transferring to UW and giving up research opportunities for a more prestigious Asian Studies program/ potentially finding more research opportunities at UW? Ultimately, I want to go to grad school, so I’m looking at what the best options would be to market myself to grad schools down the road.

Thoughts? Odds of me getting in?

Thanks!

Hi,

It is difficult to transfer to UW from an out of state college. The acceptance rate is about 30% as opposed to 60% for in-state community college students. The average transfer GPA for US applicants is about 3.45.

You certainly shouldn’t count yourself out, you could very well get in, your stats are within a reasonable range to get in, and UW does review applicants holistically. So if you are very confident in your personal statement, and other areas of your application, you could have a good shot.

There’s really no way to tell though, they’ve denied 4.0 applicants and accepted 3.0 applicants. Keep your chin up, it’s a long wait, and a long window to keep refreshing my.uw.edu. Yep, it sucks, I’m in the same boat
