My intended major is Biomedical Engineering and I got into all those schools for engineering. Cost is a little bit of a concern to me, but definitely not a deal breaker. I’m more concerned about the experience at the college and the job opportunities out of them. I did get into UCSD in muir college for mechanical engineering, which was my second major that I put down, but wasn’t really considering them. I do like the idea that purdue and UW have with a 5 year bachelor and master degree in BME. But I may not even like BME and could change majors. I definitely do want to do engineering though.
So I’m wondering if current students could offer some insight into these schools, and opinions on which one is a good option. Right now, I feel like I’m leaning towards between UW Seattle or BU.
Is Washington BME a direct admit program, or are students required to apply to their desired engineering major after finishing the pre-requirements and general education first (with a minimum GPA requirement)? If you are in-state for UCSD, then educationally it is not advantageous to attend a more expensive alternative out of state.
I am out of state for all these schools. UW and purdue are a pre-engineering freshman year and then apply for BME in soph year, so no DA (I think it’s same for BU).
Financial aid wise, BU gave me 40k im loans, 27k scholarship RPI, nothing from purdue, and 7k scholarships to UW (still waiting to hear about grants), and waiting to hear from UCSD
So thus far it sounds like in the end, RPI and UW will be the two lower cost options. My rough guess is that you presently have at least a 30K gap at RPI, and about a 22K gap at UW. I would cross Boston U off the list because of the 40K in loans (is that per year = 160K, or 10K per year?).
Pre-engineering is not inherently negative, but just realize that it’s a risk because you may not be admitted to your target engineering department.
Sorry, BU gave 40k/yr in grants and 10k/yr in loans
And yeah that’s the issue I have with these schools since I’d have to compete in sophomore year to actually get into BME, but I feel that it’s a lot more likely than trying to change majors in UCSD
