UW vs. GaTech - Please Help

Hey everyone,

I'm having a really hard time choosing between the University of Washington and the Georgia Institute of Technology. I would like to major in Biomedical Engineering but I may not get the chance at UW. I am also somewhat interested in directing and acting. My current plan is to finish my undergrad and go for an MD/MBA program. My parents have said that they will cover my undergrad costs up to 150-160k. Any remaining money would go into my grad school fund. If anyone could give advice or make corrections, I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks!

UW
Pros:
-Cheaper (in state 15k ish/year)
-Closer to home
-Easier chance to get into UW's med school (#1 primary care, #7 research - I think)
-Better business, acting, directing fields of study

Cons:
-Didn't get direct admit BME program/Honors
-No guarantee of getting into BME program after freshman/sophomore years

GaTech
Pros:
-Got into BME program (#3 in nation for Undergrad)
-New city and new surroundings, weather, people (living in Washington almost all my life)
-Research opportunities starting almost freshman year (good for med school?)

Cons:
-Expensive compared to UW (35k +5k travel expenses/year)
-Would lose Washington residency = less chance of getting into UW's med school
-Acting/Directing fields are almost nonexistent
-Would have to work part-time to help cover costs, then take a huge loan for grad school

if you seriously wanna do biomed...georgia tech is the way to go...tough as hell but itz number 3....

You do not lose residency by going away to school so long as your parents stay in Washington. That said everything I have heard about GT makes me think it's a nasty place to go to school.

Why is it so nasty? I've heard it was hard but I am willing to work very hard to succeed.

im from GA...and i've heard itz hard and difficult but itz def wrth it if u wanna do biomed...like i said b4...if you seriously want to do biomed...go to GA tech

The University of Washington has WAY more biotech research going on than GT. Seattle is also better than Atlanta. GT is not just hard but the admin is unkind to students and the place is no fun.

Ditto Barron's replies nos. 3 and 6. Except for the International Affairs program, Georgia Tech has inherited the mantle of "The place when fun goes to die."

Definitely UW...

It's cheaper and it's ranked 42 where as Tech is in the high 30's..not much of a difference and definitely not worth the tuition costs.

Keep in mind, going to UW DOES NOT give you a better chance to get into their med school. They have publicly said that undergrad school has no importance on admissions.

Tech is ranked third highly for graduate work, meaning ALL the research opps will go to the graduate students meaning nothing for you. Also, pre-med advising at Tech sucks beyond belief.

Tech is ranked 3rd...UW is ranked 4th.

You're throwing money away by going to Tech.

If you're going to work hard, then you should be able to get into UW's BME.

You're giving new surroundings too much credit. UW has a huge student population and you will definitely meet new people.

Go to UW...Social life at Tech sucks too. (Definitely sucks if you're a guy, you'll have no shot at getting a girlfriend)

Let's be honest...it looks like you are considering Tech because of its name..not because you want to go there. And that's the worst mentality for anyone. Prestige isn't everything. Definitely makes no difference to medical school. And I mean ABSOLUTELY NONE.

What other arguments do you have?
