UW Whitewater or UW Platteville

Hello, I am a college senior and I narrowed my choices down to these two. I was thinking Marquette, however that is a HEFTY price tag.

I would really love to major in Spanish and either (Accounting/economics/or civil engineering). My parents really want me to become an engineer, however I do not seem to have the same passion for it as I do with my Spanish and (economics/accounting). I understand they'd like me to make a very good salary, however I think it's important to do what you love as well.

So why I like the college;

UW-Platt:
-I toured
-I like the small/medium size campus
-they have a top-notch engineering program

negatives;
-the campus seems "dead", very little socially
-very far away from my hometown Milwaukee
-I would know 0 people going in to college (which could be a good or bad, but for me it's a negative right off the bat)
-if i decide to change my major I am not sure how strong Platt is in its language dept.

UWW:
-Virtual tour
-like the bigger campus because it has a small, friendly feel
-very good business school (econ/accounting)
-travel abroad is included in tuition
-only an hour away from milwaukee
-will know a couple of my best friends going there

negatives;
-girlfriend is not going (not very hard for me, just keep feeling pressure by her and parents)
-parents already paid the $100 "save my spot" to Platteville

What it comes down to is I am torn because I know Platt is a good school, however I like the feel and opportunities at UWW more. My parents are really strict and seem to not want to give me the choice on where to go. If I even talk to my mom about another possibility she goes on a 30-min lecture. Same with my girlfriend wanting me to go to the same school as her... I feel that the closer school will make my mom feel less "worried" but she will still be angry on having to get her money back from Platt. Any help would be great :D

Even if you worked for $8 an hour, it would only take you 12.5 hours of work to make up what your parents spent on the Platteville deposit.

From the contents of your post it sounds like you clearly prefer Whitewater to Platteville. The only real negative you seem to find with the school is that your girlfriend isn’t going there. As many posters can tell you, do not base your college decision on where your current girlfriend attends. In all probability you guys will break up by the end of freshman year, even if you went to the same college.

By the way, is there any reason you’re not considering UW- La Crosse?

That is true, and I understand that but she is very stubborn. It could also be because I tell her I’m flustered between the two. Who knows.

Anyways, I have looked at UW Lax, however there is a school Winona State Univ. by Lax and thats the other school my girlfriend wants to attend. So, my mom told me I could not go to any school near winona (probably because she feels my grades will drop.

It seems as though the girlfriend is the major reason you’re either apprehensive or not applying to the two schools which you seem interested in (Whitewater and La Crosse). If you removed the girlfriend from your decision making process, where would you prefer to go?

Whitewater or Madison. Marquette is nice however it is too expensive

UW LaCrosse and Eau Claire have good honors colleges - could you get into those If you’re considering Marquette, I’m assuming you have good stats)? It’d make your parents hesitate less, I’m sure, if you were in a well-known program.
Can you go and visit UWW to see if you like it better than Platt?
Have you run the Net Price Calculator for Marquette to see whether its net price would be within your parents’ budget range? (If you haven’t run NPCs, do so today).
