I am currently a high school student residing in Texas(yuck :P) but I am actually Canadian and have applied to the University of Waterloo- arts and businesss: psychology, U of Ottawa-Communications, and York-Communication studies. I was just wondering how these universities stack up in the opinions of Canadian students, I've spent countless hours researching with not very much luck honestly. and I really don't want to see "If you can hold a fork, you can get into York" one more time. I visited Waterloo and absolutely loved the campus and it is my first choice but I don't know much about the other two other than Ottawa is where I am from and also love it, anyone care to help me out? Thanks :)

In my opinion, Waterloo would be the best out of those 3 you are choosing from. Then I’d say Ottawa, then York. York gets a bad rep. sometimes because it almost plays second fiddle to UofT which relatively close to it.

Have you considered UBC, McGill, or UofT? Those are the big name schools if you are looking for the name of the school. And since you are living in Texas, the difference in tuition would be the same anywhere you went in Canada, I’d assume.

*Returning the favour, since you posted on my thread.lol. We are in exactly opposite situations. I wish I lived in Texas right now lol. Hope this helped!

Yes Waterloo definitely has the best reputation, too bad your not applying for computer science or engineering because Waterloo is No. 1 in canada and recognized internationally in that field. And yes, definitely consider U of T (No. 1 all rounded school in Canada) and McGill. I don’t know about UBC because I did HS in BC and many people near the top of the class applied to UBC as a safety school…

UBC has a great rep. outside of BC i guess. I am in Ontario, and UBC seems so awesome. Then again, for me safeties would be schools like McMaster, Western, UofT and such, which people from the West Coast may find to be awesome schools.

And yea, Waterloo is the best of eng., comp sci, and such tech fields. Idk how good they are for psychology, but the overall reputation is solid.

@YaleRocks: Local schools (same province ones) are usually considered safeties by top students and out of province schools not so much as safeties .

I just don’t consider Mac a safety school because I’m applying to Health Sci and it has a horrendous admittance rate.

@OP: Out of the list you gave, I’d probably rank Waterloo first in terms of reputation. Then Ottawa and then York.

But then take my ranking with a grain of salt as I’m a bit biased and am not a fan of York (maybe of Schulich but that only goes so far).

Thanks guys
Yeah, York and Ottawa are my safety schools and Waterloo is definitely the top of my list. No idea about my chances getting in, lol. I didn’t apply to U of T because I didn’t want to take subject tests and Waterloo doesn’t require it for the program I wanna do and the admission requirements are quite a bit lower so I decided it was probably better if I aim somewhere reasonable considering I don’t really know my chances. My SAT scores aren’t great to say the least but hey, they’re within the requirements, I am really hoping they look at my strong English and psychology marks. My grades in general are pretty good besides math is a bit of a weak point but I do not foresee myself needing too much math. So stressful. haha. But there is always Texas A&M if Canada doesn’t want me!
