I’m considering choosing between these schools. I’m an international applicant, so no financial aid.
UW- major: pre science I kind of want to major in computer science or statistics, but I know that it is really hard to get into these majors. And also, the campus is so pretty!
UCSD- major: applied mathematics. (I chose cs as my major and applied math as alternate major) I heard that students can change their majors, but I don’t know if I’m gonna change it to cs since I do like math. I’ve been dreaming to go to California because the weather is so great.
Also, what kind of jobs are related to applied math? (I don’t know if I will pursue a masters degree after graduating from college or to get a job, since it’s hard to get a job for a non-US citizen. Any suggestions?
Both have competitive admission to get into CS. Do you have other admissions to the CS major, or where getting into the major is not difficult? If you attend one of these schools, would you settle for a different major or transfer to a less selective school for the CS major if you do not get into the CS major?
Math graduates do often go into finance, actuarial, or computing jobs, or continue to teacher credential programs. Appropriate electives are desirable or necessary.
Here’s some info on jobs that Applied Math people do: https://www.siam.org/careers/thinking.php
I know / have known some people in Applied Math personally too, and they, after completing a Masters or a PhD, have gone on to do data/stats/math-heavy work in large companies.
I don’t have anything to substantiate what I’m about to say, and it might be caused by the fact that almost all the Applied Math people I know are grad students, but I have a feeling that in order to get a lot of jobs in the field, you need to have at least some grad school under your belt.
Also, Applied Math is super fun!
Thanks
I got accepted to stony brook for CS, but I don’t think I’m going. Actually it’s not that necessary for me to get into CS major, I do wanna try but it’s okay if I don’t get into it. If just assume I major in math, which one would be a better choice? (The cost for uw seems to be lower
What’s wrong with Stony Brook for CS (or math)?
Umm…My parents want me to go a more "prestigious " school because it’ll be easier if I go back to work in my home country
You should contact the Department of Statistics at Washington and ask about the admissions process. It certainly is a highly regarded department, but I don’t think admission is as competitive as CS.

Good luck!
UCSD Applied Math is a great program, but its costs (58K) are steep.
What are your parents saying?
In your home country, how does your major matter for the types of employment you may try to get?
I.e. in your home country, if you can have either your desired major or a school with “prestige” (presumably as seen there), but not both, which is better for your desired types of employment?
Both are good schools - it’s hard to say one has a big advantage over the other.
Do you want to be in Seattle or SD is one factor. Seattle is a nice vibrant city, but … SoCal weather!!!
Another is which is more well-known in your home country. (I.e., I live in China, and here the UCs would be more well-known).
yes it is affordable
My mom wants me to decide, my dad prefers UCSD
UCSD student here, can confirm the weather is awesome. Our math department is fairly renowned, but then so are UW’s science programs. Are you leaning one way or another right now?

Well I guess I prefer UCSD since its so competitive to get into a popular major in uw.
UCSD CS is also competitive admission, but it does not say on the web site how competitive it is:

You may want to ask directly how competitive it is to get into the major.
Washington has some general information on admission to engineering majors here:

Umm I might not change my major if I go to ucsd, I mean a cs major doesn’t mean that much for me.
After seeing your comment I feel that I really cannot make a decision between these two.
I’ll consider visit both next month.
