I know / have known some people in Applied Math personally too, and they, after completing a Masters or a PhD, have gone on to do data/stats/math-heavy work in large companies.
I don’t have anything to substantiate what I’m about to say, and it might be caused by the fact that almost all the Applied Math people I know are grad students, but I have a feeling that in order to get a lot of jobs in the field, you need to have at least some grad school under your belt.
Also, Applied Math is super fun!
