@ThePinkPixie For me I don’t think the apps came out yet I think they’re coming out in September and another problem is convincing my parents. They don’t want to send one of their children to a place they don’t know about for 2 years but I hope they say yes.
@AdventurerOM My mom is 100% okay with it. We’re both really excited. I hope your parents let you! My main problem is being underqualified…I just read this blog by this guy who got accepted and he could speak 4 languages and was involved in so many things around school
@ThePinkPixie I hope so too and don’t worry about the qualifications that’s more to see if you can handle the IB program or not and the extra curriculars are there to see what you can contribute and dedication. ANyways main point those are noot the most important factors they care about the personality the most.
Like for me reading last year forum I felt under qualified but thinking about it and believing in myself more I have more hope. Like I’m in pre-IB already planning to do IB and I’m involved enough in extra curriculars to show dedication. I’m sure if you can believe in yourself you can find stuff to offer.
@AdventurerOM Do you think? I’m scared I won’t be able to show my personality through the essays. I’ve already scrapped all of my short answers and am rewriting them. My mom thinks I need to forget about the application for a few days and just let take a break
@ThePinkPixie I know your mom is trying to help but no one can answer that question but you. You need to know your limits and you need to know your own potential and by that, I mean by having faith in yourself you are limitless and you have infinite potential. You see that’s the funny thing about human beings we tell ourselves we can’t do it so we can’t but once we tell ourselves we can do anything, guess what? The sky is not the limit the moon is not the limit there is no limit to what a confident human being can do. So f you feel you can do the application now do it if you want to take your mom’s advice then rest but bottom line it doesn’t matter what you do as long as you have faith in yourself I think you can achieve your goal. Wow wasn’t trying to be inspirational but I guess thats what happens when you’re talking at 2:09 am
@AdventurerOM I feel like you should be a motivational speaker? Maybe that is a career opportunity you should pursue because you would be pretty good at it. I think I’ll finish up my application tomorrow. I just need to stop doubting myself and rewriting everything every ten minutes
@ThePinkPixie Thanks and more importantly I hope you have less stress over this. Also since it’s just two of us shouldnt we just PM each other?
Yeah I think that’ll work
I’m also going to apply for UWC 2017-2019. I am going to apply from Nepal. I hope I get in
Hey guys!! So cool that so many people responded. @ThePinkPixie I’m really worried of being underqualified too, my grades aren’t the best but I do try to do as many activities as possible, if I were you I wouldn’t worry a bit, by the looks of it you seem like a great future UWC student. @AdventurerOM 90%! Impressive!
@Prashiddha you live in Nepal? Pretty awesome, I’ve lived there for a year and loved it :).
I’m going to start grade 11 so I will be applying for grade 12-13 (here in Italy we have 5 years of high school). I’ve heard that in the interviews it helps a lot to be well informed on the news of all over the world.
@RedEarth Well from what I heard your knowledge about the world should not be only confined to the current affairs. You also need to know about happenings in your local area. Nepal is pretty great but I fear that soon it is going to be degraded like pretty badly especially Kathmandu. I hope I could do something to save our environment.
And guys do you have any history of community service? I don’t have any history of community service because I used to be really busy in school. My school hours were like 7-5 and homeworks added some extra hours. I guess my result is pretty decent and my Eca is pretty good too. I got 3.75 GPA out of 4 in my SLC (that’s our board exam for grade 10) ( 4 A*, 3A and a B+). As it of my ECA I represented my school team for Lawn tennis for about two years (5 years ago) then I joined Theatre Club where I competed at inter house level (within my school) as a group leader / Co leader for 4years. But I think I misplaced my certificates
So I guess I’ll post about my EC’s and such now that there seems to be some solid discussion going on
In my school I’m part of our Leadership class which essentially runs all the in-school events, and does some community stuff. I’m very involved in that, and have run many events and whatnot. Through that I’ve done this thing called Vital Youth, where we donate $2,500 to local non-profits of our choice, which I had the honour of running this year! I’m also part of a group that helps integrate and works with our international students, and do an out-of-timetable course called Intercultural Certificate, which is essentially a course that I do online, with some help from a teacher, and I blog about all the cultural and service stuff I do during the semester. Through that course I’ve done stuff like help translate all our school signs into French, did some French announcing at a local track and field tournament, and gave tours of the school to some newly landed refugees. I really love these three things because they let me blend my love of cultures with service and it’s amazing!!
In terms of other service, I’m part of a committee on local youth homelessness, as well another committee that will help implement clinics into all of my school board’s high schools (with an emphasis on mental health - I’ll be attending a conference on mental health and substance abuse this coming October to help with that). I do a couple other youth groups too (Me-to-We initiatives and Youth for Change and Inclusion), and was told I’ll be on our district student council next year. I’m also starting a website called Take Action Victoria which will promote philanthropic stories from my area
I’m also super involved in Scouts Canada. I’ve been elected President of my Venturer Company two years in a row, am the group’s Youth Group Commissioner, and I’m a leader-in-training for the Beavers (the youngest section - which I love because they’re so cute and enthusiastic!). I also got accepted to attend an event at the BC Legislature this year, which was so cool considering my love for politics! Also, I earned the highest achievement at the Scout level (the Chief Scout’s Award).
One other thing I do is I write/blog about hockey and country music a lot online. I run my own blog (This Is Country Music), am an editor and writer for another (The Shotgun Seat - also country music), and have been heavily involved with two other sports websites, even being named to an administrative role until the role was discontinued. Oh, and I’m in our Model UN club. Additionally, I work at a local grocery store, and at a radio station kinda nearby on occasion.
In terms of grades, I had a 96% average in grade 9, and had a 98% average this past year (grade 10)… I’ve also won a few awards over these two years (Best All-Round, Top Academic, Ambassador fro French Immersion, Outstanding Service, Top Computer Science 9 Grade, Top Science 10 Grade), and my provincial test marks (B.C.) were 97 in Math, 96 in English, and 74 in Science (even though I studied two solid weeks for this! Oh well )
Anyways, super sorry for rambling!! I know I got carried away but ahhh I’m just super in love with the idea of attending one of these and am so pumped/nervous about applying!! I hope to hear more about all of you guys!! You all do so many amazing things and I’m glad we can all kinda talk to each other and support each other during this process!! Also one last thing, I’m really into global current events and especially have a love for politics, and I hope to one day get a career with the United Nations or Canadian politics!! (Also, didn’t know about the new Japan UWC - definitely my 2nd choice now behind Adriatic!)
@MarkusM Wow! Looks like you have a great chance for admission considering all of your achievements and services. Good luck!!
I wish I had gotten such opportunity in my school days.
@MarkusM Wowwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww my self-esteem just went down. How did you have time for all that stuff and still pull off a 98% average. Me personally I’m very involved in school but I didn’t do much service because to be honest I just didn’t care. Over the summer I tried a bit harder but I guess I didn’t try hard enough. You actually inspire me, Markus, to do better.
As for, will this help you get in UWC for sure because they want to see if you can handle the program but besides that they also want to see if your personality and perspectives are compatible with what they preach and you doing that intercultural thing proves it. I have no doubt that you will get in.
I’m having a dilemma though all I can do is think of UWC I’m just looking through the blogs and waiting for the Canadian application to come out and it’s so frustrating and if I do get in then I have to choose between UWC Costa Rica UWC ISAK Japan and UWC Mahindra India and I want to attend them all. I just hope I get in though I’ll be happy at any UWC.
@RedEarth Thank you but compared to the other year applicants I don;t think 90%will cut it now I have to make my application amazing or else I don’t think I’ll get in.And why do you feel underqualified what are your qualifications?
@AdventurerOM
Aw oh my thank you for the kind words! I really do appreciate it, and I’m sure considering your dedication and passion for the message that you’ll get in!
I also have a few questions about the Canadian application process, for anyone that may know (such as past applicants):
- How many reference letters do we need, and who should they be from (teachers, family friends, EC advisors, all of the above?)
- How many short answers/essay questions does it involve? I assumed about 4 or 5 but I'm not 100% sure.
@MarkusM I actually don’t know since the Canadian applications didn’t come out.
Also this is a message for everyone. I read about the UWC Confession page on facebook and there were a lot of partying/smoking/having sex confession and I’m totally against them so I’m thinking of not applying. Can any1 help/give adivce?
@MarkusM What are you some kind of semi-god?! Seriously! Where do you find the time to do all this stuff?? Anyways, you seem like a great person, I’m sure that you will make a long way with or without UWC, though judging from your activities I find it hard to believe that you won’t get in.
@Prashiddha I hope that if you get into UWC you can do something for Kathmandu’s environment, I’m counting on you!
I do a bit of community service, but it’s mostly participating at events.
@AdventurerOM Well, my school doesn’t help students a lot if they want to do other activities, I have little time to pursue my passions, like learning languages, volunteering or taking drama classes. In my class people have a very closed mentality so it’s hard to talk about things that matter at school.
I think that in every school sex, smoking and partying, are issues, you just have to chose the people you surround yourself with. I don’t know if I’m clear, what I mean is that I’m sure that not everyone there will smoke and drink.
Hey! I’m in Australia so not really the same as you guys. But I’m so so nervous for this application! And reading about some of the kids that are also applying… well I’m screwed. Hahahaha
