UWC applicants year 2014

Hi!

I know this may be a bit early, especially considering that the uwc application form for 2014 hasn't even been posted yet.. But are there anyone out there that are going to apply to uwc in 2014? I just thought it would be fun to talk with others that are in the same situation as me, waiting impatiently for my turn to apply.

I’m applying next year, even though I wouldn’t be able to attend that year. I just want to see how far I’d make it. Then, my 11th grade year, I will apply and hopefully be accepted!

Yeah, someone answered! I really hope you get in! Which UWC school would you like best to get in to?
I really want to get into Atlantic College in Wales! But it doesn’t really matter that much because every UWC school is amazing(at least in my eyes). :)

Hi there!

I am going to apply to UWC next year as well. It surprised me that this thread started this early-as you have written- but I am really happy that you have already made this. I am happy that we can share our experieces, thoughts before the application, through the process and hopefully as a UWC student. I also can’t wait for the application to be posted.
My favourite college is Red Cross Nordic United World College in Norway. The second is the Atlantic college. I also think all the colleges are amazing and in my opinion your co-years are the most important factor. :)

I hope you get in when you apply. I got into Atlantic this year

Congratulations Kait2997! You are very lucky. :)

hey! I’m also applying in 2014. REALLY EXCITED. Atlantic seems awesome. What do you think they are looking for apart from academic excellence?

What I’ve heard from 2013 applicants, current UWCers and alumni is that your academic results are important because the committee wants to know if you are capable for IB but they are not the most important factor.
I guess they want people who have aims and want to achieve. They look at you as a whole person. It is possible that they choose a person who doesn’t have the best academic results but is very good at group activities or he/she is dedicated about something which can be useful for a UWC college. But it is just my opinion.

First of all, thank you so much for everybody that have posted so far! It’s so nice to get to talk to people about UWC and share our experiences as MediDuet wrote. And I couldn’t agree more to what MediDuet wrote about your co-years being the most important factor! :D

I have heard from other forums that UWC values grades just as much as being active in your own society.

I personally am leader and founder of my local Save The Children Youth group, I have been in the Student Council at my school and I have been active in something called Operasjon Dagsverk(OD) or Operation Day’s Work as it is called in english. I also enjoy riding and have been doing this for about 10 years, give or take. ;)

Do anybody know if there is any riding opportunities at Atlantic College or other UWC’s?

And Kait2997 Congratulations! I hope I will get to meet you, if I am as lucky as you were ! Sry, for nagging you but what did they ask you about at the interview, Kait2997? Again congratulations! :D

btw:Im from Norway! Where are you from? :))

Yay! You answered. I am so happy.
I am from Hungary.
And eatAgrape I can also write a few questions if you want because I wrote them to a notebook when I read them at other forums. :)

Hello, UWC first years & and curious CC members!
Grape: I just wanted to let you know that while there is no riding on campus, I know two people in my house who ride competitively and ride the buss to a stable nearby to continue doing so…

So it is possible : )

ps. Hey natalie ;)

Wow, if you have any questions from past UWC interviewes I would be delighted to get a look at them, MediDuet! :)

And HanaOB thank you so much for answering my question about riding possibilities at AC. I have been looking everywhere for that information! So again Thank you so much! :)

Thank you so much for everybody that have been answering so far! I really appreciate it! ;)

eatAgrape, here they are.
What makes you an interesting, diverse candidate?
What part of your own culture are you most proud of?
Why would you be a good ambassador for your own culture?
What are you better in than other applicants? (Sorry for the awful translation.)
Someone was asked to sing his/her favourite sing and say what it means to him/her.
Of the subjects you currently study, which one most interests you and why?
In what ways do you believe you will both contribute to and learn from a UWC experience?
Difficult circumstances can teach us a lot about ourselves. Tell us about a time when you learned a lot about yourself. (Maybe it was an essay topic, I am not sure.)
How could you describe yourself in three words?
Could you tell a negative quality about yourself, if so what would it be?

I’ll try finding other questions and post them but that’s what I have now. :)

I’m also interested in applying this year! Sooo excited!
Is there anyone who has been accepted/currently attending or even graduated that can tell me what your ec’s are like?

eatAgrape, thanks for making this!!!

I think it’s really interesting to hear what applicants from all over are doing in their communities! I’m from Canada and it’s extremely difficult to get an interview… I’m going into grade 12… hahaha, and this will be my third time applying… Essentially I threw together an application in grade 10, when no one in g11 from my school did and then I decided I didn’t want to go in g11 and graduate with my class, but I put in an application anyways. Both times I messed up my application and didn’t spend as much time as I needed to in making my voice sound like myself.

For anyone at a UWC right now, are there any students who are a year older? Does it ever happen? And if you don’t mind, how do they view the 2 extra years of high school?

Honestly I think going would be a fantastic opportunity to truly experience different worldviews that I’ve learned and read about, but maybe 10% of me is wanting the freedom of university. I’ll definitely be doing a lot of thinking over the summer

Hey everyone! Good luck on your applications, I’ll be thinking of you later this year! I will be attending Mahindra College in a couple of months. Let me know if you have any questions! I will be keeping an active blog about my experiences: thuleatmuwci.blogspot.com

I am a Canadian from British Columbia. From what I understand, you can still apply in Grade 12 as long as it means you are no older than 17 when you will start at a UWC (so the following fall of your application). It does happen, especially in some countries where the education system isn’t as organized or free as it is in Western Countries. I would advise you to spend a lot of time on it! I worked hours upon hours upon hours on mine and got everyone I knew to edit it, basically. It paid off!

Some of the questions I was asked in my interview were: ‘What is a challenge you have faced these last 3-4 months and how did you overcome it?’ ‘How will you work to connect with the other students and staff?’ One of the big ones was ‘Why do you want to go to a UWC?’ Before I answered, they warned me to really state why I specifically want to go, to be unique, as they hear many many of the same answers throughout the years. ‘How would you use what you learn and experience at a UWC to connect to what you want to accomplish in your future, and how does it connect to what you are doing right now?’

@garyoak Congratulations!!! That is extremely exciting, especially to be going to a campus on the other side of the world!
I just looked up the age, and Canadian applicants can be 16-19 when they apply, however it’s obviously more difficult if you’re past 17.

In my country the education system is different. Students after 8th grade (age of 14 usually) can choose between two types of grammar school ( I am talking only about grammar schools but there are other types of school as well) either to attend one with grades 9th-12th or attend an other one with grades 9th-13th (in your first year English is your olny subject). And because of this some of the applicants are at least one year older than others but it is completely normal here.
