UWC applicants year 2014

@mediDuet AP and AICE are British college credit courses sent in from Oxford and Cambridge Universities. They are like a more advanced version of a course in most cases (ex: Chemistry honors vs. AP chemistry)

@ripcity14 Firefighting sounds awesome!!! I have such a funny mental picture of teens with fire hats on :P

@Farmgirlmoo Same here! I love meeting new people and learning about them, especially when the are so diverse and still have so much in common with me!

@tecz77 Wow, you really don’t get much time off. Here we get one week for thanksgiving break (I guess that would just be an American thing), two weeks for winter, and one week for spring

@Pashay you are so lucky to have all of those breaks between your classes. I have to switch my brain straight from math to english to history all in the time of 3 hours

@hedwig8 I’m pretty sure the Harry Potter books were my first love/boyfriend (does that sound desperate) <3 :stuck_out_tongue: sadly I can’t ever think of any kind of cool username so mine is only my name (LaRae)

Those of you on facebook: I hope I don’t guess wrong but I think I know who farmgirlmoo is (carys?) maybe? anyhow I believe dancingdaisy is (Lina?) and I havent seen the rest of you too much on the facebook group… I don’t think at least  Ripcity14, you have completely stumped me as to who you could be, are you on the facebook group?

My apologies for the paragraphs I just wrote :)

@lalalarae wahhhh, that is me, walau!! good guess!!:’)

Well I guess now we aren’t all undercover… two of us are unmasked and possibly a third? (once dancingdaisy is back) I feel slightly disadvantaged to the rest of you :stuck_out_tongue: my own fault I guess, haha

@lalalarae, I didn’t know there was a Facebook group lol. Someone post a link?

@farmgirlmoo, :frowning: that’s really sad. I love dogs. I don’t have one myself but I know how upset I would be if my UNCLE’S dog died forget my own.

https://www.facebook.com/groups/525412980885371/545643395528996/</a> this should be the link to the facebook group  It is a closed group but they accept people very quickly

@Ripcity14 @farmgirlmoo I have a dog too and she is so precious  I LOVE collies

I know the Facebook group has come up before and quite a few of us arent on the facebook group because we dont really want the fact that we’re applying to be publicized, so I guess some of us will just remain semi-anonymous…
Also, I’ve seen the posts about peoples schools, but was just curious as to what the rest were like. I know that while I go to a public school (in the US), we’re consistently ranked as one of the highest schools in the nation and are complete overachievers. At my school there is a lot of partying, but that doesnt really infringe on our academics. The stress levels at my school are so insane that our stress committee is bringing in meditation experts to meditate with the students at the start of some classes :)

@tecz77 OMG! I completely forgot that people can see the fact that I am part of the facebook group… This is a HUGE secret from all of my extended family and friends! :o My school is also in the top schools in the US, but there are many drug rings, parties, and pregnancies every weekend; I wish they would bring meditation to our school :)

@lalalarae that’s why I’m not gonna join. My extended family doesn’t know either. I’ve only told my closest friends because really there’s no point in just telling everyone. If I get in though, I’m gonna be throwing it in everyone’s face lol :P

@ripcity14 I’ve only told one of my friends… only because he saw my computer screen on this page. My friends would never understand why I want to leave and see the world

@tecz77, same with my school!!! My school is composed of 63% Asians and 34% whites and 3% others. So, people in my school are insane. Plus, our school is right next to an Ivy-League, which means a LOT of people take college courses. And yeah, our school is also top 100 in the nation. So, I really hope that UWC admissions officers take into account what kind of schools we are coming from when looking at our GPA’s because our grades are all curved so that only certain % of people can get A’s (like, if 10 people got A’s, only 2 get A’s in their transcript while the other 8 get B’s) :O

@lalalarae I know right. Most people here don’t really care about this stuff. They’re just doing it to do it so the only people I’ve told are my friends who are actually in MUWCI and one of my good friends who isn’t.

Also if we don’t get in we’re not gonna look so great.

@ripcity14 and @lalalarae- those are my exact sentiments! I dont want to have to explain to everyone if I dont get in, so only my immendiate family and best friend know about this. I can just see my grandparents and aunts/uncles bugging about this :frowning: And even my family isnt completely supportive. One of my sisters keeps telling me that its stupid to see the world and that i wont get in every time its brought up, so I dont talk about it much at home either…
and its cool to see other schools like mine. I mean, my area has a high number of high-achieving schools, but none like mine. We actually have a book written about my school about overachieveing (and i’m not trying to brag her- im not as driven as most people at my school)

@bellath That’s crazy! At my school if you can get an A you can have it on your transcript, although at some universities (like Vanderbilt in Nashville, Tennessee) only the top 10 students recieve an A so if ten students get 100s all of the 99s and lower grades become Bs.

@Ripcity14 the majority of highschoolers biggest problems are “Does he like me? Why didn’t they invite me to the party? Did you see that girls outfit?!? My mom won’t let me stay out past 10!” and I know these teens aren’t interested in making a mark on the world while exploring and enjoying the customs and diversity of the rest of the world. That is also another reason not to tell people, because making a big deal out of it and them not even reaching interview stage would suck! I think I would cry

@tecz77 I totally understand, my grandparents are super conservative and its going to be bad when I have to tell them; My mom isn’t very supportive of it either because she doesn’t want me to leave. The keep telling me to wait until college, but I feel like why wait until college when I can build up my life now?

@lalalarae, yeah that would totally suck. I mean everyone here is so amped to just APPLY to UWC, if we don’t even get shortlisted… yeesh. I’m a little more relieved though that I think only one other person on this board will apply to the Indian National Committee so less competition for me. If everyone here was on the same committee, it would be muuuch harder to get in.

@ripcity14 how many people get in through India? I’m relieved tht there have only been a few other Americans on here although I think im the only one from the south (I’ve heard that in the American selection they try to distribute the 50 students throughout the US to represent each sub-culture) I think one of my biggest goals/dreams is to be a UWCer. I guess ive been thinking about it in my sleep because I can recall multiple dreams in which I was applying/interviewing/learning/interacting and a UWC :stuck_out_tongue: now I sound obssessive

my school is terrible. one of the worst is the country! and in the uk, also. but i guess that means when i get a good result, i know i really have worked at it…/:

@lalalarae, I haven’t had any UWC dreams yet but me not got any sleep might have something to do with that :stuck_out_tongue: And I know that 120 people get shortlisted, and then they split them up into three groups of 40, and make 4 teams of 10 within each group. So group A has their interviews and team games on one day, B the next, and then C on the final day. I’m not too sure about how many apply though, I’ve read 400, 600, and my friend told me about a 1000 as well.

i haven’t had a dream, but i find it genuinely hard to imagine what it would be like!

I haven’t had a dream yet - but I hope I do soon. I love how this progresses so quickly but then I always seem a bit odd talking about things people have already spoken about.

My school isn’t bad but it’s not good - we have this thing called ‘Ofsted’ here and they have deemed it one of the top 10 outstanding schools in Britain so that is all I have. I go to a state comprehensive school, and me and my friends are one of the few groups that really do care about more than just getting a C. Partying and getting wasted is also a weekly thing here - and no one ever wants to talk about world issues/ breakthroughs in science (I amm a massive geek haha).

@Hedwig8 Mine’s really complicated because my really name can be translated into Sanskrit, and the translation from Sanskrit to Latin is aureus leo - so just a mixture of those really. Wow, that sounds really weird… :/
