UWC applicants year 2014

Although this forum is about UWC do you guys know any schools/ programs similar to UWC? I haven’t been able to find any

@okp1000 sorry I had forgotten, but are you from the states?

@lalalarae No actually I’m from Jamaica.

@okp1000 I don’t know of any programs from there, but if you look at your department of state they might have something for you.

@lalalarae & @Santoast13 My first choice would be Columbia University because I feel a New York experience would be good for going into a business-related field (as of now I’m thinking focusing on finance). There’s a lot of other colleges I wouldn’t mind going to, though.

@VictoryRose omg columbia is my dream school too  haha it’s so beautiful and different and that was the one ivy league that clicked when i went on campus. I actually enrolled in a program there and take classes every saturday. I’m not sure where you’re from but if you’re in tri-state area it’s worth looking into !

Is anyone from here – from canada? I’m interested to know… our system is so very different from that of the states!
So hey guys, what skills/ talents / history do you think you have to get you in? What makes you stand out from the rest of us?
I guess im looking for an idea as to what people who do this are like  I’m artistic, a nature lover and intrigued by human nature, cultures, society and all life’s questions…
Which is why i’m desperate to head to adriatic… i hear they have an amazing arts and culture program!
and if i did’nt say so before-- GOOD LUCK TO YOU ALL ! i don’t know when your applications are do but i wish you all the best… and if you get in tell us the deets!

@smelltheroses91, I’m not from Canada, but I have family in Mississauga and I’ve been there the past two summer (hopefully going for a third), and I absolutely loved it. People make fun of it, but the majority of Canadians, are very nice people!

Oh and @lalalarae came clutch with the that amazing blog list  Nice job!

Well i’m glad you liked it! I’ve only been to Chicago but am planning to do some road tripping when i graduate  My grandfather used to own a cottage up near Mississauga! It was BEAUTIFUL… and i can agree with you when you say we Canadians are nice— but then again so are Americans! i mean all we have is a border separating land from land…we are no different in kindness on one side than from the other. But i can agree we tend to be more polite-- in the sense that we say sorry for absolutely everything and that is no lie…i have yet to meet a Canadian that bumps into me and doesn’t even murmmer a sorry :)

@lalalarae wow thanks for the link! :)

@smelltheroses91 hi! I’ve never been to Canada before, but I would really like to visit it  I’ve seen so many beautiful pictures… which part of Canada are you from? I know there are certain places in Canada that are English-speaking and some French-speaking… sorry, I’m not very knowledgeable about Canada

@smelltheroses91 I know most Canadians are very kind, but over the summer I’ve met some pretty nasty French Canadians. But I know you’re not all like that. Every country has a nasty group of people. And I’m positive Canadians have more polite people than we do here in the states. Step into my school and you’ll understand…

@smelltheroses91, Adriatic is my absoulte obsession. I want to go there mainly because of the music program. But I wouldn’t mind being sent anywhere I just want to get in so bad!

@smelltheroses91
I’m Canadian too!!! I’m from Ontario~~ it’s getting cold over here… I live in Kitchener/Waterloo which is like an hour away from Toronto. How about you??

I’m so excited for applications!! Still have a few questions left but feeling good about it all. :D

@Dancingdaisy omg its so gorgeous you have no idea… but then looking at it --America is filled with some of the world wonders so its pretty fab too. If you ever hit Canada, go to BC (british colombia) its the most beautiful place you will ever see. The scenery … oh the whole experience is worth everything. I live in Ontario, so i’m somewhat close to New York or Buffalo if that helps you place me  It’s not as beautiful or wondrous as BC but many people love living here. And yeah you’re absolutely right— Canada is a bilingual country… so Quebec and New Brunswick are provinces which are almost strictly french or bilingual. Most other provinces speak English. :D

@Santoast13 ahhaha i can agree with you on that  Every country is diverse and that’s what makes it so very spectacular. If you go into the real heart of french cities there are some fabulous people… the culture there (Quebec city) is amazing and the city itself is beautiful… one of my favorites. Plus they have cobblestone streets with horses!
I heard a lot of American schools have bullying problems or just plain conflicts everyday… is this true or a common rumor? (in my school nobody fights… its mainly just gossip but i’ve never seen a fight in all my 3 years… we did have a guy strip and run around naked! lol)

@MediDuet
OMG i know right?!!! I really want to go there for their arts, culture and athletics program! i swear the place was made for people like me. i get the feeling we are going to be friends. If we both get in and we go to Adriatic you have to find me. It would be a miracle if we all got in and got to meet each-other!

@awkwardbirdie918 CANADIAN BUDDY! i found one! I’m from Ottawa! how are you already nearly done your questions?! the application is due in like January! Okay we have to talk… i’ll send you my email… we can discuss questions and the whole thing… maybe if we both get in we can meet!

@smelltheroses At my school we never have fights but during one week in October we had three girl fights! Luckily, we don’t really have as much bullying as they portray in mean girls and other highschool movies though :stuck_out_tongue: Canada sounds so BEAUTIFUL

LoL as i expected … its halarious how you mentioned mean girls … i was thinking the same thing when i asked!
It is… depending where you go… It is so diverse… i went to the st.Lawrence area this summer and fell in love with Quebec…
i got to go ocean kayaking… see a big blue whale, humpbacks, porpoises, belugas… mountains… they whole thing was amazing. You fall in love with nature up here… although the cold is a huge downer…

I know America is freaking beautiful though…with all the variation! I’m going to take a roadtrip sometime… just go everywhere!
in which ara/city/state do you live?-- was it you that said Florida?
you need to tell me about life in the states!

@smelltheroses91 Yes, I’m a Floridian  I live right near the beach; Its around a five minute bike from my house! Its relatively warm here during the summer it goes above 100F and now in fall it is 51F and in winter it can go down to 20-30F. We have lots of tourists that visit our beaches (because there is white sand and emerald water https://encrypted-tbn0.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcTi-bmK0jODZ2WsckXVGPYfHt7RwRL8S08n_XD2FPpVT1PFX7K6</a> ) I’ve never actually been out of the states so I don’t know how it differs :)

@lalalarae, WOWWW! Loving that beach. Gotta love the tropics huh.

Can someone tell me if this is a good personal statement prompt 1

My seventeen-year journey to this point hasn’t been an easy one but, it’s truly shaped the person I am today. For starters, I am the oldest of my mother’s children. I will also be the first of my entire family to graduate high school, let alone attend a four-year university. I’ve had plenty of personal, family, and economic problems. It’s difficult to paint the full picture of who I am and all that I can contribute. Many people often say that the world we live in molds us into the type of people we are. That the kind of environment we live in whether it be good or bad is a reflection of the person we are. For instance, those who grew up in a good community or respectful family are said to be the most successful. I beg to differ, the way I see it, people who have never been exposed to real struggle or challenges cannot obtain the necessary life skills to make better decisions and be more independent and succeed. From my own personal encounters, I believe that the more you are exposed to different types of environments the more skills you acquire to lead a successful lifestyle. In the world I live in I’ve always been one to absorb knowledge from all aspects of my life.
Growing up, however, I did not always dream big. Having a father as an alcoholic can make life very unstable. Growing up my father was both physically and psychologically abusive to my mother, and I. The inevitable downward spiral of a manic depressive alcoholic was the sign that I needed to work on being a better individual to help my family get back on track. I learned how to put on a pretty smile even after hours of crying. I learned how to be a strong female and surely an independent one at a very young age. When the recession hit, the recession hit hard. My dad was laid off at his job where he worked for over nineteen years. So it was now up to my mother, who worked harder than ever, cleaning countless houses. Every day after school I go help her clean her client’s homes. Although I dreaded helping my mother I received a satisfactory feeling, like I was useful, and learned a lot from it. I decided to get involved more in school and try harder because I wanted a brighter future than the one my parents had. At age sixteen I got my own job and helped pay bills around the house. I learned to make the best out of the least. I appreciated everything to its fullest. The grand scheme of how our world works perplexes me, but drives my desire to continue my education and pursue what previously seemed impossible.
I’ve defied the odds. Therefore, the cards I’ve been dealt in life shape my goals. I am a survivor and the environment I was born into made me one. After years of self-loathing, I can proudly say that I am an independent, strong, young lady who is passionate about creating positive change in my peers, school, community, and the world. Life will continue to have its challenges; I have, and will, continue to beat the odds.
