UWC applicants year 2014

Hello! I’m going to apply to UWC, 25 more days!!

After reading everyone’s credentials I feel way under-qualified for UWC but I am just way too excited about it to abandon it. I have a 3.99 non weighted GPA, I’ll be on my 4th year of Spanish(second IB year), I have played piano for a LONG time and I’m pretty good at it. I have founded a political interest club where we bring in speakers from different political parties to speak. I’m the sound technician at my church. I play three sports: Basketball, Volleyball, and Tennis(#1 varsity singles). I do speech and debate and I plan to do model U.N next year but I don’t have a lot of volunteering. I really don’t have the schools rated yet in order I want to go to them although the Hong Kong one looks amazing. Oh and I speak Latin too.

I was reading the website of AD when I found this: ‘It will be noted below that all Diploma students must write an examination in their own language and literature. Students of languages not provided with teachers or mother tongue tutors, take their own language as a “self-taught” subject, under the guidance of the Head of Languages A1.’
Does it mean that everyone has to sit an extra exam? I mean you have your 6 subjects and exams and you have your native language and literature in addition or it only refers to those who have chosen their native language for A1 self-taught?
So I’ll have to sit an exam of my native language even if I don’t choose self-taught for A1?

Hey! Congratulations on the Brevet! Where abouts do you live in France and how did you learn to speak english? Sorry, I don’t know about the number of applicants but I’m sure there are tons! Do you know when the application forms are being posted?

@flynnchristie the application forms for the USA are up on Aug 31st

Hi! I’m so nervous about my UWC application! I should probably stop obsessing about it, but I just keep coming back to the UWC websites and everything. Since other USA applicants might want to see their competition, I thought I might share what my resume looks like. Like @Spislaa, I have a 3.99, I play piano and I do Speech and Debate. I was the State Champion in my speech event last year, and I won a lot of other district tournaments in various events. I started the Amnesty International club at my school, and I am also an officer in my school’s Gay-Straight Alliance and Writing Club. I sing in a choir, I take voice lessons, I am on the Knowledge bowl team and the Freshman orientation crew at my school and I have over 200 hours of service volunteering at a summer program for low-income children, most of which is in Spanish. I have worked very hard to be bilingual and language is one of my favorite things in the world.

I’m in the 11th grade and my first choice for UWC is either Pearson or Atlantic, because both do a lot with water and marine life. I really liked Costa Rica because of the bilingual-ness of the school but I hear they don’t do the IB program. Is that right?

People have been talking about how some countries focus more highly on academics and achievements and others on “who you are” as a person. Does anyone know what the US’s application process is like that way?

@amayzingdaisy, as far as I know UWCCR does the IB programme and that is the only school where you can learn subjects not only in English. ( Of course subjects apart from languages, maths and so on.)

@MediDuet, No problem for the link :)

@Flynnchristie, It’s complicated. I’m actually British but I lived in Tunisia in North Africa for 8 and a half years. In Tunisia people speak French and Arabic, but I went to a French school there so I learnt French and have done most of my schooling in the French system :smiley: I just moved back to the UK a few days ago, so I’m applying through UWCGB national committee…

Guys, you all have AMAZING credentials. You’ve done so much stuff :open_mouth: Good luck to all of you!

Just to get an idea of the application (I just can’t wait!) what was last year’s long essay question for the U.S?

@Spislaa

The longest essay on the USA application last year was a 500 word personal statement. You had to talk about either an issue you found important, an influential person in your life, or a book character, piece of art, etc. that was influential and inspiring in your life.

@SJessP ok thanks!

Hi there!
This isn’t a very important question but I was just curious- Do the colleges provide students with the equipment for project weeks, outings, etc.? OR do they have to bring their own backpacks and gear?

At Mahindra you have to bring your own stuff but I’m sure if you’re unable to acquire the necessary equipment they can make it work!

I know that at Pearson, for project week they have a rule that you can’t spend over $400, but I don’t know if they provide that money or you do. As far as I know you use it for whatever you need, including equipment. I think probably if you wanted to do something water related for example, but had no gear, and the school did, they would try and help. Ultimately, it depends on each college, the funds they have, and the student’s plans…

Is there anyone applying for next year from the U.S?

@Spislaa, Hi! I am applying from the US :slight_smile: I’m from the midwest but go to school in the east coast. How about you?

I’m from Oregon and I go to school here lol

@Spislaa I’m a US applicant in year 11 and I live in Illinois!

So im guessing most of you are all trying to get into one of the UWC colleges around the world…and i was just wondering how is your application process going?
Applying for atlantic college through the GB national committee…really tough process!
Love to know more about your ongoing adventure (:

@Sour5hip, me too! Do you live near the city?
