UWC applicants year 2014

@celinewabtsywc i am also a jamaican trying to find the right college but have a lil difficulty doing so

Hello i’m from the USA and i was wondering if anybody knows how many people are accepted from the USA or in total. Also if you are asked for a interview where are they held. Thank You

My face expression twisted when I saw that you sent your message just yesterday! As my User name suggests, my name is Dana and I’m from Lebanon. I don’t have any UWC experience, but I am very curious about it and am quit interested in it too. I’m sorry I can’t help, but it’s just really nice to find someone who I feel I can relate to

Oh wait! I just realize that I actually know the answer to your question.
If I’m not wrong, from the USA, 100 people out of 400 enter the selections, but only 50 get accepted. I know this specifically for USA.

Howdy! I’m a 2nd Year from UWC Pearson College (Canada). I’m from the U.S. and when I interviewed (2013-2015), there were 120 people interviewed in my year and - I believe - 40 people were admitted to international UWC’s.

Hi Everyone,

I hope that this chat is still going because I would really appreciate a response.
I am a junior from the US. This year I have applied for UWC 2015-2016 enrollment and I am really nervous that I won’t have enough to make it to the interview stage! If someone who has been accepted or know what they are looking for could tell me if I have what it takes to make my dream become a reality that would be spectacular.

I have a 4.0 GPA all years of school (not weighted) while taking Honors and AP courses in Science, History, English, and French
I am in Band and have been playing the oboe for seven years
I am on the Board of Directors for my school’s Model UN
I am a representative in the student body government known as Cougar House
I am the Vice President of International Club
I am a member of Varsity Scholars Bowl
I have played lacrosse and soccer all years of high school
I have performed my school’s musical productions as well as acted as the head costumer
I work a part-time job at a local holistic pet supply store
I have founded a group called Aspiring Naturalist Teens
I volunteer as an ecology teacher for children’s environmental camps
I am the captain of our school’s flag team
I was accepted to and attended the National Youth Leadership Forum in Medicine
I have traveled to Greece and Turkey
I have taken college level French courses at UVM

I am interested in international medicine and anthropology as a career path and would love to be in a setting surrounded by new cultures and be able to experience new cultures as if they were my own. I am interested in AC, Adriatic as well as Pearson.

Thank you for any responses.

@Personofchange, your resume sounds very similar to mine (scary similar, actually) and I am a first year student at UWC-USA (I’m an American citizen.) Your resume sounds very good and much better on paper than most people here (although I’d probably leave out the NYLF and traveling details), but something important to take from that is that there is a lot more that the selection committee looks for than what’s in your resume, namely personality and fit with the UWC mission.

Hi DalaLebanon,
Just a quick fact check: In the 2012 selection cycle over 900 applicants considered for roughly 125 interview spots, and 52 places at UWC. I am not sure of the data for the past two years, but I am dubious that the number of applicants dropped so significantly (from 900 to 400). All the best, everyone!

Thank you so much for this feedback! I guess I was stressing a lot about how I portrayed myself on paper. Now as iI reread all of my entry essay questions, I am glad I spoke more about my personality and and aptitude for new cultures and embracing differences. What would your favorite thing about being at UWC currently?

So…
I just found out I’m a finalist in the applications. I’ll be flying down to New Mexico in April for an on-site interview.

What was it like, for those who’ve done it? Any tips?

Hey @CanadianEh323 probably you won’t see this, but if you do… please reply. I need some advice! Thank you very very much indeed.

Hey @chelinakp if you see this, reply please. I’m applying and I’d love to hear from you!

Could u plz give me some topics of the essays…

Please give me any advice and tips on anything I should remove or add. I have had many comments but I still just want to make sure I’m not redundant or boring. Any UWC alumni willing to give their input about not only the essay but the overall interview process crosses fingers?

“Please write a statement of not more than 300 words explaining why you are interested in attending a UWC school or college. Describe both what you might contribute and what you would hope to gain. If desired, you may include a description of your background, family and any experiences you have had in meeting people from other backgrounds than your own.”

Eleanor Roosevelt once said “I think, at a child’s birth, if a mother could ask a fairy godmother to endow it with the most useful gift, that gift would be curiosity.” I consider curiosity to be what has made me the person I am today. Bombarding someone with questions should be my middle name. I always thought that being curious was a negative trait. Being “inquisitive” or ‘”entrometida” as my Colombian mother would say was always something I had mixed feelings towards. However, this curiosity often fed my hunger of always wanting to learn or do something innovative, a thrilling feeling of satisfaction.
Being “entrometida”, I found out about UWC through presentations, short courses, articles and alumni and I knew it was a remarkable opportunity to challenge myself both academically and personally. The UWC movement and mission has made me realize that this is a place where it’s okay to be curious. The UWC values appealed to my dreams of using business techniques to find solutions for social problems and breaking down misunderstandings and stereotypes held around the world. I want to learn how to perceive everything from different perspectives, which I’m confident I can learn at UWC.
I have fortunately had many opportunities to interact with people outside of my background, the chief one being my mother. Originally from a tiny island off the coast of Nicaragua, her cultures and experiences as a Colombian still surprise me 16 years later. Like my mother and curiosity, another thing that has a special place in my heart is football. Football has allowed me to be in many tournaments where we stayed in hotels with teams from every corner of the map!
UWC is an innovative and multicultural environment, one of the best methods of education. Being placed in this type of environment with diverse people of different cultures and experiences would help me to become a more open-minded, empathetic and patriotic individual. With this unique experience, people will no longer see a little dot on the map when they think about the Cayman Islands, but a face they remember from an excellent ambassador representing the culture and traditions and empowering others to share the UWC values, named Derricka.
