Va/Md schools strong in creative writing

Any suggestions for a school in Va or Maryland with a strong writing major? I don't think I would get accepted at UVa, W&M, or W&L. Hollins sounds like it has a strong writing program. Any other suggestions?

johns hopkins?

Are you IS for UVA or OOS? What kind of writing program, is it journalism that you want, or more towards writing as a novelist? UVA is one of the most diffcult/selective schools in the nation, it is ranked as #2 only behind Stanford by USNWR. So you must be a the top of the top. In VA people say it is hard to get into UVA, but easy to stay, easy to get into VATech, but hard to stay.

Washington College (Maryland). It also awards a dandy writing scholarship to one student after four years to continue in graduate school.

Goucher (MD)

I’m IS for UVA and W&M and I still don’t think I can get in…not that I’m particularly trying that hard to. I have my sights set on some easier targets.

Anyway, have you looked up any of the VA/MD colleges and gone to their websites? It’s sometimes easier to gauge what kind of writing programs they have that way.

I am OOS…don’t think I have a prayer at UVa W&M or Johns Hopkins. I am leaning more toward creative writing, but haven’t ruled out other writing related fields. I see law school as an option. Thanks so much for that input about Va Tech. I will check out Washington & Goucher.

Check out James Madison University!

You might have a look at Mary Washington too.

I would definitely recommend that you check out Hollins. In my opinion, it has the strongest undergraduate creative writing program in the country. The campus is lovely, Roanoke is pretty nice, and the college has all sorts of quirky traditions.

Sweet Briar also has a decent creative writing program.

For creative writing, I would definitely have to recommend the Writing Seminars undergraduate major at Johns Hopkins. Very amazing program. All class sizes are under 25 basically, and the teachers there are extremely intimate and interactive with students. apply there as a reach.

Thanks. I will check these out. I don’t think I could get into JHU. I really like Hollins program- I’m just not sure I want such a small, women’s college. I do plan to visit & will see how I feel.

Yeah, I’m assuming you live in MD, right?

I suggest visiting a lot the colleges since they’re within reasonable driving distance. Ask lots of questions. Also, you can email specific departments of each college and ask about their programs. :)

There’s a lot of good colleges in VA you could look into.

Of course there’s W&M and UVA, but there’s also JMU, GMU, VA Tech, VCU, ODU, and then the smaller ones like Longwood and UMW (Mary Washington), just to name a few.

There’s also W&L but that’s a little on the expensive side…

My top choice is JMU, since I’m not really looking towards working my butt off for the UVA preppy-ness or the W&M academic rigor from hell… xD

I’m actually planning on minoring in creative writing (major in Graphic Design). =)

Don’t overlook UMD-College Park. They have a strong program, and a living-learning program for Writers…
