Hello! I attend a IB high school in northern Virginia and as I'm a senior I will be applying to colleges very shortly. The thing is I'm super nervous about the whole admissions process (mostly due to my family/siblings being extremely intelligent and getting into really good schools). I just wanted to know my chances of getting into a few colleges and how to deal with the nervousness when it comes to applying.

I'm planning to double major in both Computer Science and Business.

Indian (US born) Male

SAT - 2060 (Math 750, Reading 630, Writing 680)
I know my reading score is kind of low which is kind of weird since I love to read and read a lot.

SAT Math 2 - 740
SAT Physics - planning to take this in October

GPA: 4.14 W (probably going to be closer to 4.2-4.25 due to the number of IB classes I'm taking senior year)
3.7-3.8 UW
IB Diploma Candidate
All A/B Honor Roll
National Honors Society
Spanish Honors Society
Science Honors Society
Humanities+ (Co-President)
Science Fair (1st Place at School Level) (2nd Place Regional Level) (10th Grade)
Investment Club (expecting a leadership position this year)
Future Business Leaders of America
Science Olympiad

Spanish Tutor
Mentor Program (advise incoming freshman how to adapt to high school and balance work/fun)

I also am pretty funny and light-hearted person (don't know if this is really relevant) and I hope to show this in some of my essays. I rarely worry about things academically but just applying makes me nervous due to the fact that I'm nowhere as near as smart as most of my friends and family. Anyways thanks in advance for taking the time to read all of this!

Also my sister currently attends UVA (dunno if that really makes a difference there).

University of Virginia
UC Berkley
Virgina Tech
Virgnia Commonwealth University
James Madison University
George Mason University

You might not get into UVA, they don’t do legacy for in-state, they only use it for OOS and treat them like in state if you have parental legacy. UVA is a reach for you even in state, same with Berkeley, the other you will definitely get in. Also your SAT 2-score is average at VTech. Maybe retake the SAT?

Yeah I don’t really think I have a shot at Berkley but I’m applying because I hope to live in the bay area one day and going there for college would be helpful.

VTech doesn’t even look at SAT subject tests. Do you think I should retake the Math SAT 2 for UVA? I don’t intend on taking the SAT 1 again.

I just hope to be accepted into UVA as it’s my top choice.

VCU, GMU, and JMU are all safeties.
VT is a low match/match.

UVA would have to be a high match/low reach because of your SAT. Try retaking it and aim for at least a 2180 (average accepted SAT score from my school, also IB in NoVa). Since UVA also has a holistic admissions, try to write an amazing essay and go for an interview to increase your chances.

UC Berkeley is a reach if you’re trying to major in comp sci and your SAT score is a problem here too.

My 2 kids are at UVa, they don’t do interview so you don’t have this to worry about.
Some students re-take the SAT 1 in Oct, or Nov
even when they have applied EA
because if the student is deferred during EA, the new SAT score will be available to the school when they look at the application again during RD.

I think you are a good candidate at most of these schools…the strength of your schedule may make a difference too. Have you ever thought about taking the ACT?
