VA Tech - if you got in, what was GPA?

My son wants to go to VA Tech but is only a high school sophomore. GPA needs to be stronger and just took PSATs. For those who got in, what was your GPA? He has great EC (including officer position and loads of volunteer work, 2 Varsity sports and 1 JV). Can a high SAT help boost chances with low GPA (his is around 3.5 right now with honors).

VA Tech is noncompetative. If you apply early your chances actually go down. The regular acceptance percentage is around 70 something. You dont need high stats espcially if you live in VA and have a bullet proof vest. Just get a 500-600 on everything and a 2.5 GPA and your fine.

klee91, do not ever say again something that refers to the school shooting. It is disrespectful and will cause a big argument among CCers. Just telling you.

bravesgirl, I do live in Virginia and it is a very good school. At my school (in-state mind you), the average SAT score for people who got accepted was about 1970 and the average GPA was 3.66. I think that his GPA would be fine if coupled with a high SAT score.

Good luck on your college search!

1970 would be high for VPI. Actually, it's at or slightly above the 75th percentile. The median/mean score there is just under 1200 on a 1600 scale. The average high school GPA is 3.74, with 38% in the top 10% of their classes. About 2/3 of those applying are admitted. So, it's not "uncompetitive," but it's not fiercly competitive.
